Mahindra opens new manufacturing plant in Detroit

Mahindra has inaugurated its new manufacturing plant in Detroit, USA - the first new production facility in the city in the last 25 years. Anand Mahindra, Executive Chairman of the Mahindra Group and Lt. Governor of Michigan, Brian Calley were present for the occasion.

The Indian car maker has invested US$ 230 million in the new facility, which currently has an installed capacity of 10,000 units. Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) will be investing an additional US$ 600 million in the facility by 2020. At present, the factory employs 250 people, while another 400 jobs will be created following the fresh round of investment.

Mahindra has already invested about US$ 1 billion in the US. The company operates 30 facilities in the country with a total workforce of around 30,000.

The Mahindra Roxor will be the first model to be built at the new factory. The Roxor is an off-road vehicle, designed and developed by MANA. According to Richard P. Haas, President and CEO of MANA, the Roxor will be launched in the US in early 2018.

There have been rumours about a Thar-based off-road vehicle for the US market. Reports suggest, the Mahindra Thor will be built at the new plant and might use the 1.6-litre engine from the Ssangyong Tivoli.
