Tata Zest XM, XMS get 75 PS diesel engine

When Tata Motors launched the Zest compact sedan in 2014, it was available with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The diesel engine was available in two states of tune - 89 BHP (with a variable geometry turbo) and 74 BHP (with a fixed geometry turbo). The latter was available only with the base XE variant.

Now however, Tata has stopped offering the 89 BHP engine with the XM and XMS variants. Instead, they get the 74 BHP version and the XMA, XT and XTA variants are the only ones left with the 89 BHP engine. Additionally, alloy wheels are now restricted to only the XT and XTA grades of the car.

The Zest was launched as a rival to the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent. It was the first car in the compact sedan segment with an automated manual transmission (AMT) and the first diesel AMT in the country as well. However, it has not managed to dent the sales of its rivals and currently stands in fourth position among the sub 4-metre sedans in the country.

The Bolt, which is the hatchback sibling of the Zest, has also failed to make an impact.
