China: Suzuki Alivio (Maruti Ciaz) interiors spied

The interiors of the Suzuki Alivio have been spied in China. The car will be sold as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in India.

The interior of the car has a dual-tone theme with wood and chrome inserts. There is an engine start/stop button, infotainment system and a climate control unit, which suggests that the car in the pictures is the top end variant. The door pockets are big with bottle holders. The Alivio is 4545 mm long, 1730 mm wide and 1475 mm high. Going by the pictures, the car's dimensions seem to have helped it gain a spacious interior. The cabin appears roomy with good leg room for the rear passengers. Suzuki seems to have paid special attention to rear-seat comfort. A centre arm-rest with cup holders and rear air-conditioner vents have been provided and the floor of the car is almost flat.

When the car goes on sale in India, it is expected to be powered by a 1.4-litre, K-Series petrol engine from the Ertiga. The car will also be available with the Ertiga's 1.3-litre, 90 bhp DDiS diesel motor. Apart from a manual gearbox, an Automated Manual Transmission could also be available.

The Ciaz will compete against the Honda City, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, Nissan Sunny and Renault Scala.

Production-spec Maruti Suzuki Ciaz spied undisguised

The upcoming Ciaz sedan from the Maruti Suzuki stables has been spied at the company's plan at Manesar, Haryana. Pictures show a fleet of the VXi and VDi (mid) variants of the Ciaz parked at the manufacturing facility.

The Ciaz has a radiator grille with horizontal chrome slats, swept-back projector headlamps, and tail lamps that are shaped similarly to those we saw in the Ciaz concept, which was displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo, held earlier this year. The bumper too seems to have been carried over from the concept, but the fog lamps have been changed. At the rear, the horizontal chrome strip, seen on the boot of the Ciaz concept, seems to have been left out - surprising, considering Indians' love for chrome. As expected, the dual exhaust system has been left out as well and the bumper houses a pair of reflectors instead of the tips of the exhaust pipes. The tiny wing mirrors that were seen on the concept have been replaced by larger, more practical ones and sport integrated turn-indicators. Steel wheel replace the stylish alloys that were seen on the concept. The ZXi (top) variant should sport alloy wheels.

Going by the DDiS badge on the car, we expect the Ciaz to be powered by a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre, 90PS, MultiJet diesel engine. The petrol variant of the car is likely to get a 1.4-litre, 95PS, K-Series engine.  Apart from a manual gearbox, an Automated Manual Transmission could also be available.

The Ciaz is a replacement for the SX4 sedan and will compete against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid, Nissan Sunny and Renault Scala. the car is expected to be launched next month.

Maruti Ciaz snapped at close range

The test mule of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz sedan has been caught on camera once again. The new set of pictures put up on the internet gives us a closer look at the car.

The pictures show the top-end variant of the Ciaz with 16-inch alloy wheels. The exterior of the production-spec car looks largely similar to that of the concept. However, unlike the concept which had dual exhausts, the production version comes with a single tail pipe. A pair of reflectors takes the place of the dual exhausts in the rear bumper.

The interior of the Ciaz has a dual tone theme. There is a black dashboard with a start/stop button, an audio system with a 5-inch display with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in compatibility and a multi-function steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustments. The car has beige leather seats and door panels. There is a centre armrest for the front passengers and the driver's seat is height-adjustable. The car also has a dead pedal, auto dimming rear view mirror and AC vents for the rear seat passengers.

When the Ciaz is launched, it is expected to be available with a choice of two engines:

  • 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder, K-Series petrol (94 bhp @ 6000 rpm, 130 Nm @ 4000 rpm)
  • 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, DDiS diesel (89 bhp @ 4000 rpm, 200 Nm @ 1750 rpm)

Along with a manual gearbox, a Continuously Variable Transmission is likely to be offered.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz likely to get CVT

After the success of the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) equipped Maruti Suzuki Celerio hatchback, it was rumoured that the country's largest automaker would use the technology in the upcoming Ciaz premium sedan as well. However, it turns out that the company is more likely to equip the car with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) instead.

Maruti Suzuki plans to launch the Ciaz later this year. The company is positioning it against the Honda City and Hyundai Verna which come with a CVT and 4-speed torque converter respectively. Maruti considers AMT a "poor man's automatic" and fears that equipping the Ciaz with one could lower the car's snob value. Additionally, the AMT is not as smooth as a conventional automatic - something that matters at that price point.

When the Ciaz goes on sale in India, it is expected to be powered by a 1.4-litre, K-Series petrol engine from the Ertiga. The Ertiga's 1.3-litre, 90 bhp DDiS diesel motor is also likely to be offered.

The Ciaz measures 4545 mm in length, 1730 mm in width and 1475 mm in height. The car's dimensions will ensure that it has spacious interiors.

Additional details of the Maruti Suzuki YL1 sedan revealed

Here are more details of the latest sedan from Maruti Suzuki YL1, slated to hit the Indian market next year. Touted to be a replacement to the SX4, the YL1 code-named Maruti Suzuki sedan will be launched in India during the second half of next year. Gauging by the scooped images of the car, the YL1 seems all set for an unveil at the upcoming 2014 Indian Auto Expo. Notably, Team-BHP sources indicate a July 2014 production start for the YL1, another factor hinting at a second half of 2014 launch for this car.

Today, Team-BHP presents to you exclusive imagery of the YL1's interiors and many more details about the car. From the spyshots of the interiors, it is evident that the YL1 sedan shares dashboard bits with the likes of the Swift and the Ertiga. A beige and black theme dominates proceedings on the dashboard, with a wood insert running across it for a more premium look and feel. The car also gets features such as a Bluetooth equipped factory fitted stereo and an automatic climate control module.

The automatic climate control module also gives away the fact that rear AC vents will be standard on the higher variants of the car. A sunglass holder, height adjustable steering and a dead pedal are the other noticeable features of the YL1 sedan. The car will get disc brakes up front with drum brakes at the rear. ABS+EBD and twin airbags will be the safety kit on offer with the top end variants of the YL1. The car is also said to weigh about 100 kilograms lighter than equivalent variants of the SX4.

The lower weight could help, considering the fact that the YL1 will use the 1.4 Liter K-Series petrol engine (94 Bhp-130 Nm) and the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine (90 Bhp-200 Nm). The 1.4 liter K-Series petrol engine is less powerful than the 1.6 liter VVT unit of the current SX4. So, every kilogram saved will add to the performance of the YL1. Top end variants of the YL1 will ride on 16 inch alloy wheels shod with 195 section rubber. Chrome door handles and window sills will be standard on the top end variants.

Maruti Suzuki YL1 SX4 replacement sedan: More details surface

Days ago, Team-BHP scooped details of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YL1 sedan, a car that is likely to replace the SX4 by the end of next year. Team-BHP moderator Anshuman Bishnoi has now unearthed new details about the upcoming YL1 sedan, including the variants that could be on offer.

From the new details, it appears that the SX4's replacement will carry forward the various advantages of the current SX4, along with other changes to make the new car an improved product in many respects. However, it remains unclear whether the YL1 (code-name of the new sedan) will replace the SX4 or whether the new model will continue selling alongside the current SX4.

  • The YL1 sedan could retain the ample ground clearance that the current generation SX4 features, and along with it the relatively taller stance compared to other C-segment cars sold in India.
  • The space (leg room) offered by the YL1's rear seat is said to rival that of the Nissan Sunny/Renault Scala sedans.
  • Since the car is based on the Swift/Ertiga platform, parts sharing will be the norm with many interior parts borrowed from the Swift.
  • Similarly, the engines are expected to be shared with other Suzuki cars, with the 1.4 liter K-Series petrol and the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engines being the two motors on offer.
  • The gearbox's feel is similar to that of the Swift/Ertiga, once again a hint of extensive parts sharing.
  • The variants (LXi, LDi, VXi, VDi, ZXi and ZDi) will retain the traditional naming scheme found on current Maruti Suzuki cars.
  • Hydraulic engine mounts and heavy damping are expected to be the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) deadening factors in the diesel powered model.
  • The car, inspired by the Suzuki AuthenticS concept, will ride on 16 inch wheels on 195 section rubber, while the base variant will make do with 15 inchers.
