Rumour: Hyundai i20 AT facelift gets 1.2L petrol engine, CVT

According to a media report, the upcoming Hyundai Elite i20 automatic facelift will be offered with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine. The smaller capacity engine will replace the 1.4-litre unit that currently powers the i20 automatic. Additionally, the new Elite i20 is rumoured to get a continuously variable transmission (CVT) paired with the 1.2-litre engine. It is set to make its debut at the 2018 Auto Expo.

It has been reported that the new CVT has been developed specifically for India and is likely to make the new model more fuel efficient than the outgoing 1.4-litre version that comes with a torque converter. The report suggests that it won't come with paddle shifters however this feature could be introduced in the future.

The smaller 1.2-litre engine will also put the i20 is a lower tax bracket - more specifically, it will attract 12.5% tax, which applies to sub-4 meter vehicles and cars with 1,200 cc petrol engines. This should allow Hyundai to price the new i20 automatic more competitively.

Currently, the Hyundai Elite i20 1.4 automatic attracts 24% tax. It is available in only one trim (Magna) and is priced at Rs. 9.15 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). That's Rs. 81,000 more than the Maruti Baleno Alpha CVT variant.

Apart from the new engine and transmission, the Elite i20 facelift will get revised styling with a new grille, re-worked tail lights and new alloy wheels among other updates.

Hyundai Elite i20 Automatic priced at Rs. 9.02 lakh

The Hyundai Elite i20 Automatic is now on sale in India at a price of Rs. 9,01,812 (ex-showroom Delhi). This makes it the costliest variant on offer in the Elite i20 line-up. The AT is being offered only with the mildly loaded petrol Magna trim, but it is still priced more than the top-end Asta (O) Diesel model. Moreover, the price difference between the petrol Magna MT and petrol Magna AT is Rs. 2.84 lakh.

This overboard pricing is a result of the fact that the Elite i20 comes with a bigger engine: a 1.4-litre Dual VTVT four-cylinder petrol that churns out 98 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 132 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Due to the bigger engine displacement, the Elite i20 AT isn't eligible for the small car excise duty benefit, thus increasing the overall price.

Being available in just the Magna trim, the Elite i20 automatic also misses on features like ABS, side and curtain airbags, reverse parking camera, front fog lamps, auto headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system, smart key, automatic climate control, and alloy wheels.

The Elite i20 automatic will compete against the likes of the Honda Jazz CVT, Maruti Baleno CVT, and Volkswagen Polo GT TSI.

Elite i20 Automatic now on Hyundai's website

Thank you to the Team-BHP fan Hillol Saha who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts!

Hyundai India has listed the Elite i20 automatic on its official website, though prices of this new variant haven't yet been revealed. The Elite i20 automatic's brochure was leaked last week, revealing most of its specifications. It will be offered only with a petrol engine option, and will be available in the mid-level Magna trim. The Korean automaker is expected to announce prices of the Elite i20 AT in a couple of weeks.

The old i20 was offered with an automatic transmission in its previous iteration, but with the launch of the Elite i20, the slushbox was dropped from the spec sheet. But with rising demand for ATs, Hyundai too has brought back the convenience of an automatic gearbox in the Elite i20.

The AT variant will be powered by a 1.4-litre, Dual VTVT petrol engine, which is mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. This powertrain is capable of generating 98 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 132 Nm @ 4,000 rpm.

Since it will only be offered in the Magna trim, the Elite i20 AT will miss many features like ABS, reverse parking sensors, front fog lamps, auto headlamps, touchscreen infotainment system, smart key, projector lights, and DRLs.

Thank you to BHPian nipcarlover for sharing this information with other enthusiasts!

Hyundai has updated the brochure of the Elite i20 with specifications of the upcoming automatic variant. This suggests that the launch of the Elite i20 AT is likely to be just around the corner. The brochure also reveals that the automatic transmission will be available only with the Magna trim, thus limiting the features on offer.

According to the brochure, the Elite i20 AT will come with a 1.4-litre, dual VTVT petrol engine that churns out 99 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 132 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. This engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain setup is identical to the one that was recently launched in Indonesia.

Additionally, the leaked brochure image also shows that the Elite i20's top-end Asta (O) variant will now come with a total of 6 airbags - driver, passenger, side and curtain.

Earlier reports have suggested that the Korean automaker is planning to launch the Elite i20 AT during this year's festive season.
