SIAM, FADA to move SC for more time to register BS4 vehicles

According to a media report, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Federation of Automotive Dealers (FADA) are planning to approach the Supreme Court to ask for an extension of the March 31, 2020 deadline for the registration for BS4 vehicles. This move comes amidst the outbreak of Coronavirus which has resulted in fewer footfalls in showrooms.

Two-wheeler dealers are worried about the high unsold inventory of BS4 bikes. While most of the BS4 four-wheelers have been sold, only select stock of certain non-moving colours and models is unsold. The deadline for registering all BS4 vehicles is just 2 weeks away and stocks of BS4 two-wheelers is still high.

SIAM is expected to approach its members and acquire their consent before approaching the Supreme Court of India.

FADA issues legal notice to UM Lohia

Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) has issued a legal notice to UM Lohia after the company ceased its operations in India.

The statement states that the closure of operations has resulted in huge losses to dealers. The dealers have also been exposed to litigations from customers.

Earlier this month, it was reported that UM Lohia had stopped operations following a dispute with its US-based partner UM Motorcycles. Production had been stopped leading to lay-offs.

UM Motorcycles and Lohia Auto formed a joint venture in 2014 and had set up a manufacturing plant in the state of Uttarakhand. The company was offering its Renegade series of cruiser bikes in India. These were essentially Chinese motorcycles. Consumer interest dipped as no one wanted to purchase Chinese replicas of American motorcycles. The brand lost its value, and with it the investments of dealers, who were now holding a product few desired.

Back in 2016, UM Lohia introduced BS-III motorcycles, at a time when BS-IV norms were set to come into effect. As a result, dealers were left with inventories of unsold BS-III bikes, for which UM Lohia refused to compensate them. It was only after much cajoling that the company even acknowledged the problem. Even then, instead of buying back the BS-III motorcycles from the dealers and returning their advances, UM Lohia came up with the scheme to sell BS-IV motorcycles to dealers in lieu of their stock of BS-III motorcycles and advances. However, the BS-IV motorcycles supplied by UM Lohia were entirely unfit to ply on roads with several basic components such as EFI Module controller and gear breaking down within few days of use of the motorcycles by the customers.

To make matters worse, UM Lohia has now folded up its operations and shut down its warehouse for spare parts making it impossible for dealers to service the warranty claims on the defective UM motorcycles.

FADA: Calculate market share on basis of actual registrations

Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has written to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to ask OEMs to calculate market share on the basis of actual vehicle registrations found in the Vahan platform.

In his letter to SIAM, FADA President Mr. Ashish Harsharaj Kale has requested the auto industry to shift to the new system, which is also the norm followed elsewhere in the world.

It is said that it would have been easier to predict the slowdown, which the auto sector is currently facing, if retail numbers had been reported instead of factory dispatches.

Passenger vehicle inventories down to 25 days

According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) passenger vehicle inventories are down to 25-30 days.

The decrease in inventory levels can be attributed to a reduction in wholesale billing by manufacturers and a cut down in production as sales have slumped in the past few months.

Reports suggest that inventory levels of commercial vehicles and 2-wheelers remain at 55-60 days and 60-65 days respectively.

Retail sales continued their downward trend in the month of July 2019. All segments except 3-wheelers registered negative growth compared to the same period last year. 2-wheeler and passenger vehicle sales dropped by 5% and 11% respectively. The CV segment registered a de-growth of 14%, while 3-wheeler sales grew by 3%.
