Toyota expected to launch Hilux in India in the coming months

The Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Innova and Fortuner. It will compete with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross in India

In August 2020, there was a report that Toyota was looking to introduce the Hilux pickup truck in India. Now, according to a media report, the Japanese carmaker is expected to launch the Hilux in the country in the coming months.

The Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Innova and Fortuner. It measures 5,285 mm in length and has a wheelbase measuring 3,085 mm. Both these figures are more than the MPV and SUV.

To keep costs down, Toyota is expected to use parts from the Innova and Fortuner on the Hilux. The pickup is also expected to use the same 2.4L and 2.8L diesel engines and transmission units from its siblings. While the front suspension is likely to be the same as well, the rear suspension will use a leaf spring setup instead of coil springs as the former is more suited to handling loads.

The Hilux will compete with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross when it comes to our shores. Since it is expected to share parts with the Innova and Fortuner, Toyota should be able to keep its pricing competent.

2021 Toyota Fortuner scores 5-stars in ASEAN NCAP crash tests

The 2021 Fortuner & Hilux shine in ASEAN NCAP crash tests.

The 2021 Toyota Fortuner has been awarded a 5-star safety rating by ASEAN NCAP.

The Fortuner scored 32.92 points for adult occupant protection, 43.38 points for child occupant protection and 10.95 points for Safety Assist Tests.

In the frontal impact test, the vehicle provided good protection to both adult occupants, but the driver's lower legs showed risk of injury. The test also revealed that the vehicle provided good protection to the occupants in an event of a side impact. The Fortuner offered better head protection compared to the Hilux.

ASEAN NCAP used a Thailand-spec Toyota Hilux for the crash tests. The Hilux is a pick-up truck that shares its underpinnings with the Fortuner. The test vehicle was powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine and was equipped with 3 airbags.

Rumour: Toyota mulls introducing Hilux pickup in India

According to a media report, Toyota is looking to introduce the Hilux pickup truck in India. At present, the company is evaluating the vehicle for our market.

The Hilux shares its underpinnings with the Innova and Fortuner. It measures 5,285 mm in length and has a wheelbase measuring 3,085 mm. Both these figures are more than the MPV and SUV. It comes with a 1.5 m x 1.5 m loading bay at the rear.

The Hilux also uses the same engines, transmissions and suspension components as the Innova and Fortuner. However, at the rear, it uses a leaf spring setup instead of coil springs as the former is more suited to handling loads. Toyota is reportedly considering the 2.4L and 2.8L diesel engines for the pickup and the latter could produce up to 500 Nm.

Toyota will look to assemble the Hilux locally. Since it shares many components with the Innova and Fortuner, the company should be able to price it lower than a CBU would cost. The pickup is expected to be priced between Rs. 15 lakh – Rs. 20 lakh in India.

The Hilux will compete with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross if it comes to our shores.
