Next-gen Ford Mustang spied ahead of 2023 unveil

There are also rumours of an all-electric version of the Mustang sometime in the near future.

The next-generation Ford Mustang has been in development for a while now. Now, a new set of spy images are doing the rounds showcasing the upcoming model wearing production-spec panels for the first time.

The next-gen Mustang in the spy shots are still heavily wrapped but do reveal subtle details of the upcoming model. These include a slightly larger grille upfront, sleek LED headlamps on either side and a more angular front-end, compared to the current generation. The side and rear profiles remain similar to that of the current-gen, albeit with a few subtle updates and revisions all around.

However, the most significant updates expected on the next-gen Ford Mustang is under the bonnet. The upcoming model is expected to come with a hybrid powertrain and an all-wheel-drive setup, both of which are a first for the iconic muscle car. There are also rumours of an all-electric version of the Mustang sometime in the near future.

The next-gen Ford Mustang is expected to have its global debut sometime in late-2023, with production and retail said to start in early-2024. However, Ford is yet to make an official announcement of the same.

Rumour: 2023 Ford Mustang to get a V8 hybrid powertrain

The hybrid Mustang could also feature a 4WD system.

The next-generation Ford Mustang could come with a hybrid powertrain. According to reports, Ford has been developing a hybrid powertrain for the new-gen Mustang, scheduled to debut in 2023.

Reports suggest that Ford could offer two petrol-hybrid options - the first is based on the 2.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder unit while the other is based on the 5.0-litre V8. If the rumours do materialise, the 2023 Ford Mustang will be the first model from the brand to pair an electric motor with a V8 engine.

The hybrid Mustang could also feature a 4WD system with the V8 engine powering the rear wheels, while the electric motor will power the front wheels.

Further to this, the new-gen Mustang is also expected to feature Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission unit; built from the ground up. The new transmission unit is already in use on models such as the F-150 hybrid, Bronco, Ranger, Explorer and Lincoln.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was driven at a consistent pace of 50 km/h and the entire journey was completed in 27 hours.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has set a new Guinness World Record for EV efficiency. The electric SUV averaged 10.7 km per kWh on a 1,777 km journey from John O' Groats to Land's End in the UK.

The record attempt took place on July 3. The electric SUV was driven by three BBC transport correspondents - Paul Clifton, Fergal McGrath and Kevin Brooker, who also hold the world records for petrol and diesel efficiency between them.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was driven at a consistent pace of 50 km/h and the entire journey was completed in 27 hours. The Mach-E was charged only twice during the attempt, spending a combined time of 45 minutes being plugged in.

The Mach-E used in the world record run is a rear-wheel-drive extended range version. It comes powered by an 88 kWh battery pack. While the Ford Mustang Mach-E has an official 621 km range (WLTP cycle), the effective range during the attempt was boosted to more than 800 km, by driving conservatively.

Buying a used out of state Ford Mustang

Is it worth doing this for an out of state car? What sort of taxes am I likely to pay?

BHPian chocoboycc recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I am looking to buy Mustang (2016 model). Issue is all used cars I'm finding are out of state and I'm a resident of Maharashtra. The cost of the car I wish to buy is around 60 lakhs. I am worried about the road tax etc., that I might face while re-registering to a Maharashtra number. Is it worth doing this for an out of state car? What sort of taxes am I likely to pay?

Also, the car has a VIP number. Will I be able to retain this number? Thank you for your time and help.

Here's what BHPian androdev had to say on the matter:

In Karnataka, you can pay KA road tax and receive a new RC card retaining the same out-of-state number. Optionally you can also apply for a KA number - but this is not mandatory. However, having an out of state number is an invitation to get stopped by police, etc. so most people get a KA number.

I don't see why you would want to take the trouble to look outside MH - I am sure there is ample choice in MH.

Here's what BHPian dhanushs had to say on the matter:

The Road Tax is generally for 15 years. So, if you are buying a 5-year-old car, you will have to pay the tax for the remaining 10 years. Some states calculate using a depreciation of value method, where you have to pay a certain percentage for a particular age. Some states have an option of paying for 5 years irrespective of the age of the car.

Tax rate (%) is calculated just like a new car, based on the invoice value of the new car, particular variant.

Other than Road Tax, there isnt much of an expense (may be broker fees, and green cess etc.) while transferring to other states.

You will have to physically show the car to the RTO inspector for him to verify the engine number and chassis number, only then will he allow you to pay the tax.

CHeck out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Rumour: Mustang to get only electric powertrains from 2028

According to a media report, Ford will offer the Mustang with only electric powertrains from 2028. There will be no petrol powered version of the muscle car available.

The report suggests that the next-generation Mustang is not expected for another seven years. The car, which has been codenamed S650, was expected to be launched in either 2022 or 2023. But now, it is not likely to be launched before 2028. However, a facelifted version of the current-generation model could be launched earlier.

The delay in the launch of the next-generation Mustang is caused because Ford was having trouble making its new CD6 platform suitable for its muscle car. That made the company put off its plans to launch the new car till 2026. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in Ford pushing the launch ahead by another 2 years. By then, variants with internal combustion engines are likely to be discontinued.
