Creta-rivaling Honda mid-size SUV could launch by mid-2023

Honda's first mid-size SUV could go on sale in India during the 2023 festive season.

Honda will finally have an SUV to take on the likes of the Creta, Seltos, and the recently launched Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. According to recent reports, the new model is expected to go on sale during the 2023 festive season.

Honda’s new SUV will be based on an updated version of the Amaze platform and is expected to measure around 4.3 meters in length. Although little is known about the design of the car, reports suggest that it might borrow styling cues from the all-new WR-V, CR-V and BR-V, which are sold in other markets. However, Honda says, it will receive market-specific upgrades when it arrives in India.

On the inside, the SUV could get Honda’s latest 12.3-inch infotainment head-unit and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, similar to the new Accord and CR-V. Speaking of features, the car will be equipped with the ‘Honda Sensing’ ADAS suite.

Reports suggest that the new SUV will be powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that is offered in the City, while higher variants could be offered with the strong-hybrid powertrain from the City Hybrid. Transmission options might include Honda's familiar 5-speed manual and CVT, with the hybrid version getting an e-drive transmission.

Honda confirms new SUV for India; to take on Hyundai Creta

The upcoming Honda mid-size SUV (codenamed: 31XA) could be based on a completely new platform.

Honda has confirmed that a new India-specific SUV is under development. While the carmaker hasn't revealed the launch timeline, reports suggest that it could be introduced in the market around August 2023.

The new Honda SUV is expected to share its platform with the City. That might sound familiar as the N7X concept that was unveiled in Indonesia also uses the same platform. Although some reports suggest that the new SUV (codename: 31XA) will be built on a completely new platform.

SUVs account for almost 35% of the total passenger vehicle segment. Honda is now looking to grab a piece of the pie that is already divided among popular products like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Tata Harrier and the likes.

Honda charts return to mid-size SUV segment

Honda is likely to launch a mid-size SUV to compete with the Alcazar, Hector Plus and Safari.

Looks like Honda has finally narrowed down on the next SUV for the Indian market. If recent reports are to be believed, the Japanese carmaker is planning to enter the mid-size SUV segment. Whether it will be able to replicate the success of the Kia Seltos and MG Hector, only time will tell.

We know that Honda was evaluating the HR-V for India. The project had even reached the trial production phase before it was scrapped. Honda realized that 30% localization wouldn't be enough to offer the HR-V at a competitive price.

This prompted the company to look at other segments. At one point, Honda was considering an Amaze-based compact SUV. But, given how crowded this segment already was, it made little business sense.

Now, Honda has shifted its focus back to the mid-size SUV segment. But this time, instead of the HR-V, it is believed that a City-based SUV is being considered for India.

That's where the N7X concept SUV comes into the picture. The car was revealed in Indonesia earlier this year. The report states that Honda could offer the all-new model, dubbed the S-SUV, in two seating configurations - 5-seater and 7-seater. While the 5-seater will compete with the Creta and Seltos, the latter will take on the Alcazar, Hector Plus and the Tata Safari.

The S-SUV is expected to share its engines and suspension components with the City. It could also use the BR-V's electrical and electronic architecture to reduce costs further.

Rumours suggest that the S-SUV won't go on sale anytime before 2023. Once launched, Honda hopes to sell around 40,000 units per year.

Honda Elevate trademark filed in India

The production version of N7X concept is expected to be unveiled in August.

Honda has filed a trademark for the 'Elevate' name in India. It could be a name reserved for the brand's upcoming 7-seater SUV.

Earlier this year, Honda had unveiled a new 7-seater SUV concept called the N7X in Indonesia. The production version of this concept is expected to be unveiled in August. It could replace the BR-V.

The N7X concept shares its underpinnings with the City. The exterior design of the car is inspired by the City and HR-V.

While details of the production version are still scarce, it is believed that the new SUV could be offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a manual gearbox or CVT. In the City, this engine produces 121 BHP and 145 Nm.

If launched in India, the N7X could compete with the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus.

Indonesia: 2022 Honda BR-V patent images leaked

The production-ready version of the all-new Honda BR-V is said to make its global debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), which is scheduled to be held in August 2021.

Patent images of the all-new Honda BR-V have been leaked. The production-ready version of the 7-seater SUV is expected to make its global debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), which is scheduled to be held in August 2021.

The registered patent images consist of pictures of the car’s headlights, radiator grille, front bumper, tail lights and rear bumper. The pictures indicate that these parts are not very different from those seen on the Honda N7X Concept, which was revealed in May 2021.

The Honda N7X Concept had a bulge on its left mirror which served as a camera mount. The same bulge is seen in the patent images as well. This indicates the presence of the Honda Lane Watch system, which monitors the left side of the car to expand visibility and reduce the driver's blind spot.

The one difference that we could spot between the N7X concept and production-ready BR-V is that the lower DRLs in the BR-V have been replaced by fog lamps.
