Hyundai gets type approval for the fuel-cell Nexo in India

The Nexo could become the first Hydrogen powered car in the Indian market.

Back in 2019, we had reported that Hyundai could launch the Nexo in India in 2021. Now, Hyundai has received type approval for the fuel-cell vehicle. The Nexo could become the first Hydrogen powered car in the Indian market.

The Nexo measures 4,670 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, 1,630 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,790 mm. The 5-door SUV has a 95 kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 40 kW battery pack. The SUV has an electric motor rated at 161 BHP and 395 Nm. According to Hyundai, the Nexo can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 179 km/h. The car is said to have an estimated range of 666 km (WLTP).

However, there is a lack of infrastructure for fuel-cell cars in the country. These cars would require the setting up of hydrogen filling stations.

Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen FCEV feasibility study begins in India

According to media reports, Hyundai has started a feasibility study of the hydrogen fuel-cell powered Nexo FCEV in India.

The Hyundai Nexo debuted at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It's an SUV that uses a 40 kW lithium-ion battery and a 95 kW hydrogen fuel-cell. It comes with an electric motor that has an output of 161 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. The car has a range of 666 km on the WLTP cycle.

Last month, the Supreme Court of India had suggested the government to explore the feasibility of hydrogen fuel vehicles to curb pollution. Just as the proliferation of the electric vehicle is limited by charging infrastructure, hydrogen fuel-cell cars will also require an extensive network of hydrogen filling stations.

Rumour: Hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo might launch in India

According to a media report, Hyundai is planning to launch the Hydrogen-powered Nexo in India in 2021. The SUV was showcased alongside the recently launched Kona Electric at the Korea Business Summit held in Delhi in 2018.

The Nexo is a 5-door SUV that comes with semi-autonomous driver assistance features. It has a 95 kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 40 kW battery pack with an output of 161 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. According to Hyundai the Nexo can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.2 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 179 km/h. The car is said to have an estimated range of 800 km (New European Driving Cycle).

The Government of India, in a bid to promote alternate fuels, has slashed the GST rate on hydrogen-powered vehicles from 28% to 12%. The move could pave the way for cars like the Nexo. However, just like electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars would require setting up of hydrogen filling stations.

Is Hyundai considering the Nexo for India?

Thanks to BHPian CrAzY dRiVeR for sharing this with fellow enthusiasts.

In a series of YouTube videos, Hyundai India has started promoting the Nexo fuel cell vehicle. According to the video description, Hyundai is considering fuel cell vehicles as an alternate source of propulsion instead of conventional fuels. The videos also include a look into the future of mobility through Hyundai's eyes.

Earlier this year, Hyundai showcased the Nexo at the India-Korea Business Summit held in Delhi. The SUV comes with a 95 kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 40 kW battery pack. The power output is rated at 161 BHP and 395 Nm of torque. Hyundai claims a 0-100 km/h time of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 179 km/h. The range is estimated to be 800 km (New European Driving Cycle). The Nexo comes equipped with a range of semi-autonomous driver assistance features.

If launched in India, this could be one of the first fuel cell cars in the country and could serve as a halo product for the Korean manufacturer. However, the lack of infrastructure for fuel cell vehicles is a deterrent.

Meanwhile, Hyundai is looking to launch the Kona SUV in 2019. It will be the Korean carmaker’s first electric vehicle in India. Reports also suggest that they are considering the Ioniq as well. The car was showcased alongside the Nexo at the India-Korea Business Summit.

Hyundai, Audi partner to develop fuel cell technology

Hyundai and Audi have entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement to develop fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) components and technologies. As part of the agreement, both companies will share patent licenses for an undisclosed number of years.

Both carmakers will have mutual access to fuel cell components and will leverage their collective R&D capabilities. Hyundai will share the lessons learned during the development of the ix35 Fuel Cell and the Nexo with its partner. Audi will also gain access to Hyundai's FCEV parts supply chain. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Motor Group plans to strengthen its position in the fuel cell components business. Both brands have also agreed to work together to accelerate the development of fuel cell technologies.

Hyundai Mobis, the FCEV component manufacturer, will expand its production capacity to meet the future requirements of Hyundai and Kia FCEVs. Its plant in Chungju, South Korea currently has a capacity to produce 3,000 powertrain fuel cell complete modules (PFC) per year. These modules consist of fuel stacks, drive motors, power electronic components and hydrogen fuel supply units.
