The new Phantom is based on an aluminium space frame platform that is claimed to be lighter and more rigid than the outgoing model. The standard wheelbase version measures 5,762 mm in overall length and is 2,018 mm wide, while its height is 1,646 mm. The wheelbase is 3,553 mm. The Phantom VIII comes in a familiar design package. The front end features Rolls Royce's Pantheon grille finished in chrome flanked by full-LED headlights with DRLs. The iconic 'Spirit of Ecstasy' hood ornament sits on top of the grille and is retractable. Moving to the side, the new Phantom has a bold shoulder line that runs along the length of the car. It has rear suicide doors and chrome trim around the window frames. The rear features a raked windshield and boot with a chrome garnish. The tail lamp design has been slightly tweaked and now features LEDs, while the redesigned rear bumper houses twin chrome exhaust tips.

On the inside, the new Phantom retains the basic dashboard layout from the previous generation except for a few minor modifications. The analogue instrument cluster has been replaced with an LCD screen, while a new high-resolution heads-up display has been introduced. The BMW iDrive-based infotainment system has also been updated with gesture controls. Also new to the Phantom is the 'Gallery', which is a part of the dashboard where customers can install art pieces of their choice. In the rear, you get reclining seats with separate infotainment screens and a drinks cabinet in the centre. The interior is lined custom leather and wooden trim. Customers can also opt for the Starlight headliner.

Under the bonnet, the 2018 Phantom uses a revised 6.75-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine which produces 563 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 900 Nm of peak torque @ 1,700 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Rolls Royce claims that the Phantom will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds (extended wheelbase version is 0.1 second slower). The claimed top speed is 250 km/h.

The new Phantom rides on air-suspension and 22-inch "Silent-Seal Tires" designed specifically for Rolls Royce. The car features double-layer insulation and the carmaker claims that the cabin of the Phantom VIII is quieter than the previous model by 60 decibels.

Rolls-Royce reveals Phantom VIII

Rolls-Royce has revealed the Phantom VIII in London. The car is based on an aluminium spaceframe rather than a monocoque. According to Rolls-Royce, the new architecture is 30 percent more rigid than that of the Phantom VII.

The Phantom VIII carries forward the car's traditional design. Apart from minor tweaks, its profile is comparable to the outgoing Phantom. The car retains its long hood, strong shoulder line that drops off at the rear and suicide doors. However, it gets revised front and rear bumpers and as new LED headlights and tail lights.

While the basic layout of the dashboard has not changed, there are minor styling tweaks. These include a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, i-Drive-based infotainment screen, now positioned in the centre of the dashboard and the Rolls-Royce timepiece now moved to the passenger side. The car also gets a new 7x3 head-up display. Rear seat passengers can use aircraft-style tray tables, screens behind the front seats, drink cabinets with glassware and reclining seats. Other features include various driver assist programmes, night vision, active cruise control, collision warning, pedestrian and cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning and WiFi hotspot.

The new Phantom is powered by a 6.75-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine that produces 563 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 900 @ 1,800 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The Phantom VIII also comes with 22-inch "Silent-Seal Tires" that have a foam layer inside, which is claimed to reduce tyre noise by 9 decibels. Additionally, there is 6 mm double-layer sound insulation, which weighs 130 kg. The car comes with a new double-wishbone front suspension at the front and a five-link setup with air-suspension at the rear.

Rolls-Royce has not yet revealed any plans to launch the Phantom VIII in India.

2018 Rolls Royce Phantom images leaked

Brochure images of the 2018 Rolls Royce Phantom have been leaked ahead of the official unveiling next week. These images are of the eighth-generation extended wheelbase variant of the Phantom.

The new Phantom sports the characteristic up-right grille and a tweaked bumper. The new headlight design incorporates LED lights, while the secondary circular lights have been dropped. The side profile is largely similar to the current generation Phantom.

On the inside, the traditional instrument cluster has been replaced with a digital display. The center console is finished in dark wood trim on the car in the leaked pictures, while the dashboard is lined in leather with the Rolls Royce timepiece shifted towards the right.

The new Phantom will be based on a lightweight, aluminium architecture and could feature a revised V12 engine. It is still not clear whether the new model will use an updated 6.75 L V12 from the Gen-7 or the Rolls Royce Dawn's 6.6 L, twin-turbo V12 instead.

The new Phantom will be officially revealed on July 27, 2017 and will go on sale in 2018.

Next-Gen Rolls-Royce Phantom to launch in 2018

Rolls-Royce has officially confirmed that the next-gen Phantom will be unveiled in 2018. The luxury car manufacturer has also released a single teaser image along with the aforementioned announcement, which doesn’t really reveal anything about the car, and is just a shot of the car's aluminium platform. The released image is a representation of the fact that the company has started development of the next, eighth-gen Phantom.

The aluminium chassis featured in the teased image will not only underpin the eighth-gen RR Phantom, but will also be the base for the company's upcoming SUV offering, currently codenamed the Cullinan. Several new Rolls-Royce cars of the future will also be made on the same platform.

The British carmaker had earlier announced that production of the current-gen Phantom will stop later this year. Rolls-Royce is also planning a series of special edition 'Zenith' models of the Phantom, in order to commemorate its success in the luxury car segment.

The next-gen Phantom will most likely include advanced tech and safety features borrowed from the new BMW 7-Series. There are also rumours that suggest a plug-in hybrid powertrain is under works for the new Phantom.
