Rumour: Royal Enfield developing 400 and 600 cc engines

Earlier this year, we had reported that Royal Enfield was developing a 400 cc engine. Now, media reports suggest that the company is working on a 600 cc engine as well. These two new engines will be used to power two new motorcycles, which Royal Enfield is expected to launch in 2015.

Like the current range of engines from the company, the new engines are believed to be single cylinder units. However, they will be capable of producing a lot more torque. While the 400 cc engine is estimated to produce 41 Nm of torque, 13 Nm more than the current 350 cc unit, the 600 cc engine develops 60 Nm of torque, 19 Nm more than the current 500 cc motor. The new engines are also expected to come with fuel injection.

The new bikes are likely to share their underpinnings with the Continental GT. The quality of the bikes is expected to be a step above the current model line-up.

Royal Enfield's new logo

Thanks to BHPian shan2129 for bringing this to our notice.

Chennai-based Royal Enfield has adopted a new logo which will be used on all its motorcycles henceforth. The company claims that the new logo is vibrant and contemporary, but holds on to its British motorcycling roots.

Along with the logo, Royal Enfield has changed its monogram and crest and brought out a new key design for its bikes. The logo of each of the company's product has been altered as well. The company intends to increase the appeal of its bikes with these changes.

Royal Enfield is one of the world's oldest bike manufacturers and has a huge following in India. It is a part of Eicher Motors Ltd., which has planned to invest Rs. 600 crore over a period of two years for increasing the company's annual production capacity and aid the development of global product platforms. Is Royal Enfield developing a single-cylinder 400cc engine?

A report on Autocar Professional quotes that Royal Enfield is working on a 400cc engine, which will be based on it's existing 346cc single-cylinder engine doing duty on the Classic & Bullet 350. This will be more of an enhancement to the current 346cc engine, rather than an all new 400cc engine.

The most powerful engine from the RE stable is plonked in the Continental GT, which is a 535cc block producing 29 BHP; while the 350cc & the 500cc engines produce 20 BHP & 27 BHP respectively. The under-development 400cc engine is expected to be in a state of tune to generate power output which can fill the gap between the 20 - 27 BHP range.

Royal Enfield currently sells the Continental GT, Thunderbird, Classic & Bullet range of motorcycles. It will be interesting to see which of these motorcycles get the new engine block first.

Royal Enfield Continental GT launched in India

The Royal Enfield Continental GT created quite a buzz when it was first showcased at the Auto Expo in 2012. Ever since, enthusiasts have been awaiting its launch eagerly. The wait has finally come to an end, as the Chennai-based company has launched the bike at an event in Goa, at a price of Rs. 2,05,026 on-road Delhi and Rs. 2,14,043 on-road Mumbai.

With its round headlamp, clip-on handlebars, bright paintwork and racing-style humped single seat, the Continental GT looks like a stylish British café racer, straight out of the 1960s. Those looking to take a pillion can choose an optional dual seat. The bike is available in two colours, red and yellow. Bar-end rear view mirrors are not a part of standard equipment.

Power comes from a 535 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, producing 29.1 bhp and 44 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike features an electric as well as kick starter and the gearshift is located on the left of the engine.

The Continental GT uses a chassis, engineered by Harris Performance of UK. While the front suspension is a 41 mm fork, the bike uses twin gas-charged Paioli shocks at the rear. Royal Enfield has provided single disc brakes on both wheels.

Different from traditional Enfields, the Continental GT certainly looks like the most exciting product to have rolled out of the Chennai factory in a long time.
