Rumour: Tata's RaceMo sports car project up for sale

Tata Motors has reportedly put its RaceMo sports car project up for sale. According to a media report, the company has decided to sell its only sports car project along with stakes in other companies in a bid to raise funds.

The TAMO RaceMo was first showcased at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Following its unveiling, there were reports of Tata Motors planning to launch the car in India. However, the project was later shelved indefinitely due to its high cost of production.

Developed under the newly launched TAMO sub-brand, the RaceMo is based on a patented MOFlex Multi-Material Sandwich (MMS) structure. The mid-engined, 2-seater is powered by a 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine that produces 187 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 210 Nm of torque @ 2,500 rpm, which is paired with a 6-speed AMT with paddle shift. The Racemo is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 6 seconds.

Rumour: Tata TAMO Racemo sportscar won’t go into production

As per a report in the recent edition of Autocar India magazine, the TAMO Racemo sportscar won't go into production in the near future. The company has reportedly shelved the project indefinitely, though no official confirmation announcement about the same has been made yet.

Tata Motors had unveiled the Racemo sportscar at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. The company had claimed that the car will be on sale in India by the end of this year. Later, the launch window was postponed to early 2018, though latest reports claim that the Racemo project won't see the daylight anytime soon.

The major reason behind the decision to shelve the Racemo project is said to be the high cost involved in bringing the concept into production. The company has budgeted around Rs. 250 crore for the commercialization of the Racemo sports coupe. However, senior management and board members of Tata Motors are reportedly suggesting that this amount should be invested in the company's commercial vehicle division, which is currently suffering to maintain its market share due to increasing competition.

The Racemo is powered by a 1.2-litre, turbocharged Revotron petrol engine that is rated at 187 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 210 Nm of torque @ 2,500 rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed AMT gearbox that comes with paddle shifters and push button reverse. The company has claimed a 0-100 km/h sprint time of under 6 seconds for the 2-door, sub 4-metre sportscar.

TAMO Racemo can be assembled as a kit car

Tata Motors recently unveiled its first production sportscar at the 87th Geneva Motor Show. Introduced under the company's TAMO sub-brand, the car has been named Racemo and is expected to be launched in India by the end of this year. Upon its launch, it will become India's first commercially sold kit car.

The TAMO Racemo is built on a new patented MOFlex Multi-Material Sandwich (MMS) structure, which is a modular architecture that allows the use of just a few large basic modules to assemble the car, instead of the hundreds of small components that go into a conventional vehicle. This limited number of components of the TAMO Racemo has given Tata Motors an option to sell it as a kit car.

The company's CEO - Guenter Butscheck, has reportedly indicated that the Racemo will be built at small workshops across the country, thus eliminating the need to setup a new assembly line in the automaker's factories. It is still not clear whether the company would ship out the kits just to its dealers or individual customers as well. However, the CEO has mentioned that dealers that won't be willing to scale up their operations in order to handle the extra job of assembling the Racemo at their workshops won't be retailing this car.

The Racemo is equipped with an independent double wishbone suspension setup all-round. It gets disc brakes on all four wheels and is equipped with ABS and EBD. The front has 205/50 R17 tubeless radial tyres while the rear gets 235/45 R18 tubeless radials. The car is 3,835 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,208 mm tall. Tata C-Cube concept showcased at an event in Mumbai

Tata Motors has showcased a new concept car named C-Cube at the Future Decoded 2017 event in Mumbai. The event was organized by Microsoft, a company that Tata Motors has recently partnered with to develop in-car connectivity platforms.

The C-Cube has been revealed under the recently incubated TAMO sub-brand. It is basically a three-door hatchback which has been given some contemporary design cues. The front fascia features a mesh pattern grille that merges into two angular headlamp clusters, which house projectors and LED DRLs. The small bonnet gets a U-shaped structure with the bonnet shut lines rising from the front grille's edges.

The side profile is characterized by multi-spoke blacked out alloy wheels and a sloping roofline. A prominent character line running from the door panels into the tail light cluster can also be seen. Other design elements visible in the released images include ORVMs mounted on the door, an air vent on the lower part of the rear fender and blacked out B-pillars. The released images don't showcase the rear design of the car.

Tata Motors hasn’t revealed any further details about the C-Cube concept. However, the car might be showcased at the upcoming Geneva Motors Show, alongside the Futuro concept.

Tata Motors unveils future strategy, TAMO sub-brand announced

Tata Motors has unveiled its future Passenger Vehicle (PV) strategy. The automaker is aiming to be listed among the top 3 PV manufacturers in the country by the year 2019. The company claims to have researched and analysed current market trends and drafted its strategy in order to be ready for changing customer requirements.

According to Tata Motors, the hatchback and UV segments will be the high-selling segments for the next few years. The study revealed that customers upgrading from hatchbacks are avoiding sedans and instead opting for crossovers or SUVs. As a result, the company will now focus mainly on these two segments.

Tata Motors has decided to develop 7-8 products on just two platforms. The company currently offers products built on six platforms in the country. Limiting the number of platforms being used across the portfolio is expected to help the automaker to enhance the economies of scale. The two platforms will be capable of being scaled across different body styles and will be compatible with hybrid and electric powertrains.

As a part of its new strategy, Tata has also unveiled a new sub-brand - TAMO. The new sub-brand will be operating as an individual vertical. TAMO will be working on a low-volume, low-investment business model. It will be responsible for incubating new technologies and partnerships for future mobility solutions.

The automaker will also be introducing niche products through the TAMO brand. Media reports suggest that the first product to come out under the new moniker will be a sports car concept that is scheduled to be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7, 2017. Though more details about the concept haven’t been revealed, it is expected to be a two-seater, mid-engined sports car that is internally codenamed as the Futuro.
