I have been having the same problem with the glovebox. It NEVER opens the first time.

Re: Tata Nano Twist XT : Driven

I received a mail yesterday from Tata Motors titled "Nano Power 1+1". This was regarding an exchange offer on my Nano with the new Gen X Nano Easy Shift, Automated Manual Transmission.

I must admit this has perked up interest. Btw, does anyone have info on the Easy Shift. I tried to google it but only got some images with some obvious changes such as - a boot that can be opened, a generous front grille, etc. But no info on the technicals. Can anyone share that please?

Also, there are no indications on the pricing yet. I hope it does not cross the 3-lac mark.

Cheers!

Easy Shift - Tata's name for Automated Manual Transmission. Deep inside, the Gear box is still a manual one. Gear changes are initiated and executed through sensors for speed, and hydraulic acutators to disengage a gear and engage the next gear in the sequence. This is not a true automatic gear box.
Advantage: FE is closer to that with a Manual tranny
Side-effects: you will see a second or so gap between one gear to the next while the gear change is execute inside.

Pricing: ex-showroom price is expected to be 40k over the current ex-showroom price.

Err....Isn't this the same as what happens in an Automatic Gear box? - Gear changes being executed as speed changes are sensed.

Yes. The logic in the regular automatic gear box (also known as torque converter or slush box) is the same as AMT. The RPM of the engine, throttle input level and speed of the car are sensed and the appropriate gear is selected.

However, there is a difference in the mechanicals between the torque converter and AMT. In the torque converter, the transmission of power from the gear box to the wheels takes place using a thin film of hydraulic fluid. When the gear box shaft rotates, this motion is transferred to the hydraulic fluid which in turn transfers the motion to the wheels. In this process some energy is lost in the hydraulic fluid. That is why slush boxes have poor FE compared to manual boxes.

In a regular manual gear box, the transfer of power happens using a clutch plate. When the clutch is full engaged, there is a complete transfer of power from the gear box to the wheels. As there is no wastage of power, the FE is better.

An AMT has the same mechanism as the regular manual gear box with a clutch. Instead of the driver operating the clutch through the clutch pedal, and selecting the gears, there is another mechanism (operated by hydraulics) that operates the clutch and selects the gears. Because of this the FE of an AMT will be the same as the manual gearbox. In fact, the FE may be better because the AMT logic will consistently upshift exactly at the same RPM (if the accelerator pedal is pressed hard, the upshifts will be delayed though) whereas a driver may not always do this.

Hope this clarifies your doubt.

Re: Tata Nano Twist XT : Driven

My colleague brought office his new Twist XT yesterday. We had the chance to experience the car. Feather light steering, roomy interior(for a small car), wide rear seat(three avg. built guys sat with rather ease), nice cooling from AC, music system and Bluetooth connectivity worked well, improved overall fit and finish. All in all it felt like a perfect city car .
One can only assume things will be only get better in the upcoming next gen version .

Hope this helps fellow bhpians who have Nano Twist XT and in case they have faced similar issue.

I have a Nano Twist XT which I bought in Aug'14 after exchanging my previous Nano.Primary reason as I mentioned in one of my earlier posts was my shoulder problem which made me go for the Nano Twist XT with power steering.

It has an "Active return" feature which is extremely handy in city driving conditons. It helps in returning the steering back to center position whenever turned either ways - right / left.

I was facing an issue with this feature intermittently. At times it used to stay in a turned position without the "active return" getting activated. This was a bit scary since you expect it to work and do not really make any effort to return the steering to center position. Since then I kept observing and checking it to see if there is any particular reason for this.

I had twice got it checked with Pandit Auto and while they acknowledged this issue since it happened there also, the service personnel checked the steering assembly etc. thoroughly and did not find anything wrong. I was sure that there must be some sensor which would be getting activated at some conditions and was asking if there is any such sensor, however they were not able to tell me so.

Then I met Mr. Kundargi (AGM - Pandit Auto - Saharkarnagar Service Station). He was extremely helpful knowing that I had already visited twice. He told me to come over whenever I was free and he would run the software and check.

I met him and he told me that luckily there was a tata motors technician available today who can do a thorough check. The technician listened to my issue and then explained me how this feature gets activated.

1. Put the ignition key and switch it on. Now turn the steering completely to the right and then to the left. This helps the sensor in understanding the total turn of the steering and that is when the "active return" feature gets activated.

2. If you do not follow point 1, then whenever the speed of 30kms is reached, the active return feature will get activated by the sensor.
He demonstarted this to me and it worked perfectly well.

As per him premium hatchbacks like polo etc. have another sensor to avoid this issue however at Nano's price point it is not available. Thanked him and Mr. Kundargi for explaining and demonstarting this in a detailed manner.

Overall happy with the manner in which this got resolved. Good going :-)

Thanks, SSD2122. When you were observing this, what were the points that you observed ?
1) Speeds when it did not kick-in
2) Cold / warmed-up vehicle ? (either at start / after some running) ?

Well yes. I was thinking if it has to do with temperature. Does it get activated if I raise the engine rpm after starting. How many times is this happening? Is this something to do with how fast or slow I am taking turns. etc. etc.

Point 2. I also had observed it however was not able to narrow down to the exact speed at which it used to get activated.

Re: Tata Nano Twist XT : Driven

I was hoping for some observations that could be tallied with the points mentioned by the TASS folks.

Point 2 matches as I mentioned earlier but could not narrow down to exact speed. Other one would be difficult for anyone to know by just observing.

Now am wondering if this is mentioned anywhere in the service manual. Guess not. Have not checked it though.

Re: Tata Nano Twist XT : Driven

The Twist is now available with a Rs. 60,000 discount (25,000 cash discount and 35,000 exchange bonus) in Trivandrum. I'm thinking of exchanging my 2010 LX for this since i might have to shell out another 1.2 lacs for the twist where as more than 2 lacs for the GenX. People who dont mind having a closed boot, this is an awesome time to get a Twist! You can push for more discounts maybe I guess

@freakmuzik That's some deal!! Tried to get my LX exchanged for the Twist, but the dealer estimated the exchange value to be 65000. And that is some offer, I would never accept. Never knew that price depreciation for Nano, would be such.
Still if you have a Nano XT in mind, why not the AMT.
