Calling all owners for a "Tata Safari" into the Himalayas

Okay - this thought process started after the "National Meet" started petering out into a "Notional Meet", and especially after Goddy's post on the Kashmir to Cape thread.

The two of us put our heads together and decided that we're game for a drive up to Leh. As are some other Safari owners like Doctorkats.

We therefore decided to turn this into a 'Tata Safari' to Leh - while the original idea is from Safari owners, anyone from TBHP is welcome to join the ride.

The tentative schedule is sometime during the last two weeks of August, 2007. All the chaps from the South/West/East meet up at Dilli, and we start off from there to Leh.

We dont have specifics about the route as both Goddy and I are novices, but I'm sure we'll work that out soon enough - we have enough Leh/Ladakh expertise on the forum!!!

This is a family event - better/bitter halfs are welcome. I dont know about kids though - at those heights it may be a problem.

The following have confirmed participation. Rest are yet to confirm and may start posting on this thread:

Tanveer (tsk1979) with wife

Doctorkats

Godfather with wife

Steeroid with a Brit friend

Steer, you can get a lot of info regarding the route and stuff from sideways. I am sure he could help out.

As for me, would love to come, but chances are grim.

PS: Since our vehicles are generously endowed we should be able to accomodate some passenger requests too.

Here you can have all the info you need on the Delhi - Leh Route.

Leh – Ladakh Destination Guide : BCMTouring

It has been compiled by one of our own members - Yogesh Sarkar. You can PM him for details.

I guess all the interested Raid de Himalaya participants this year can use your experiences about the roads up there :-). Have a good time guys.

Fantastic.
I'll need to check with a fellow BHPian if he's free in August.
We'll bring the Suzuki Samurai ,if we're coming.

With this route, U will definitely need Man-power sometimes.

The route and such is straightforward to Leh, lots of expertise.
Currently I am researching into comfortable accommodation for the stopover between Leh and Manali.
There are many tents available, but many people tell that there can be decent accommodation to be found for 1000 bucks /room/night.

Also make sure that this will be a week long trip.
So if you start from Delhi on saturday morning, you can be back on Saturday morning, if you keep it tight, or Sunday morning if you want to take it easy.

Either way it is 5 day leave from office.
The mid week of Aug is good as 15th Aug is a holiday(wednesday).
So you take one less day off.

For those who want in make sure you start jogging everyday. At those rarified air levels you need to have your lungs in top notch shape.
If you bring your own vehicle, a 4WD is a good idea but not a necessity, many innova qualis etc., also make it to Leh. Since we are not running the raid, the route can be taken slowly and steadily without inflicting damage to suspension and such.

For rest of the finer details we have experts who have done this route before.

Thanks for the invite Steer, but I am not going to be in the country August & September. Anyhow, I don't think I would have been able to join you anyway as I really don't fancy the drive to Delhi! Thanks anyway and have fun.

A damn good idea but this will call for at least a 10 day trip unless we are trying to do it the Raid style. Going to be very difficult getting 8 days off (assuming a Saturday or Sunday in between) in August.....let me sleep over it.

In any case, even if I'm not able to join in, fellow Dicor mates MUST keep an evening free in Delhi - booze & dinner at my place.

Cheerscheers:

For Delhi guys, min 10 days, right
For other joinin in from South, 12-14 days atleast!

I m doing a 9 day ride, but being alone , it helps in terms of avg speed and im covering Khardungla and Pangong Tso lake only.

Suman, if you are off saturday/sunday then mid august means 4 working days (Aug 15 off).

I take it that the proposed national meet is now considered defunct

Are you guys going to halt at Shimla/Manali for a night or so? I could join in for that much distance and wouldn't mind taking a few days off in Manali.
