Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Mod Note: Our Innova Crysta Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Big shoutout to Vid6639 for shooting these pictures & his coverage of the Auto Expo. Thanks for sharing, man!

The next-generation Innova is finally here and it's dubbed the 'Innova Crysta'. Hard to believe that the current-gen has been on sale for 11 years...and it's still a favourite among MPVs. Front-end styling is not as neutral as the Innova of 2005. Will polarise opinions:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1.jpg

A quick glance at the high points. Airbags, ABS and EBD are standard on all variants:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1b.jpg

Definitely looks more upmarket now. The sub-branding makes us believe that Toyota will sell the current Innova (primarily to the cab segment) alongside the Crysta (to personal owners). You can't argue with the business sense as the current Innova is still a hit in the taxi market. Toyota says no, we'll just have to wait and watch. I know a lot of Toyota managers felt heartburn when the Qualis was discontinued:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-2.jpg

The Innova has grown - it measures 4,735 x 1,830 x 1,795 mm (L x W x H), although the wheelbase of 2,750 mm is identical to the current Innova / Fortuner. Toyota insists this is an all-new chassis:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-3.jpg

It may be bigger & more contemporary, yet there's no escaping the fact that it is a van. The rear is clean, with the only unique detail being...
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-4.jpg

...the vertical turn indicators below the horizontal tail-lamps. Check out all the extra chrome on this 2.8L version:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-6.jpg

Zooming in:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-7-2.jpg

Toyota has a cutaway on display to give a better view & feel of the cabin. Look at the rear seat and you just know the under-thigh support is good (which it is):
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-7.jpg

Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-8.jpg

While the display example had 215/55 R17 rubber, we hope that customer-spec cars wear 16 inchers. Just more practical for India and will bring better ride quality too. While on it, we hope Toyota chooses a nicer rim design - these are just weird! Naked wheel well has no cladding. Unfortunately, drum brakes at the rear:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-8b.jpg

A look at the Innova in another shade:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-9.jpg

Yep, the chrome door handles have a chrome request sensor for pure keyless entry:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-9a.jpg

Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-10.jpg

We're told that these Innova Crystas have been built right here in India. When asked about the launch date, Toyota said 'before May 2016':
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-11.jpg

In a darker shade of maroon:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-12.jpg

Gosh, those headlamps are massive! Like 2 feet in length:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-13.jpg

Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-13b.jpg

The Innova Crysta will be sold with a 2.4L & 2.8L diesel. The latter will for sure come with an AT. An Innova AT will take away a LOT of sales from the Fortuner. Toyota will also be offering the Crysta with a 2.0L petrol, since the climate in Delhi is so unpredictable :

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Quality is much better than the current Innova & Fortuner. Hard plastics, yet its comparable to the Altis in many areas. No cost cutting visible anywhere. Steering wheel is chunky (has tilt + telescopic adjustment). Has cruise control too. Vid6639 felt that the dash area in front of the driver is too top-heavy:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1.jpg

Sweet looking instruments. However, they're a size too small:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1b.jpg

This 2.8L AT variant had a black & brown combo. Lots of piano black on the doorpad. Notice the bottle holder + pocket below:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1c.jpg

Electrically-folding mirrors with 'auto' functionality for everyone. Hard to believe that the 2005 Innova didn't even have internally-adjustable ORVMs (you had to roll the window down to adjust!!):
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-1d.jpg

The front seats are very comfortable. Like sofas, really. 6-way electric adjustment (no lumbar). Unlike the Fortuner, you can adjust the under-thigh support here:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-2.jpg

Fixed non-adjustable armrest & a cup-holder. Handbrake positioned close to the driver:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-2b.jpg

The chrome-ringed engine start / stop button (to the right of the steering wheel):
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-3.jpg

7" touchscreen ICE. None of the demo cars had it turned on:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-4.jpg

Engine has ECO & Power driving modes. Think of them as taxi & owner modes . Yep, to the right is the traction control off button:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-5.jpg

6-speed AT with 'sport' mode and tiptronic controls. I like the layout - down to downshift & vice versa:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-5b.jpg

Twin gloveboxes. This is the upper one with cooling. Both gloveboxes had a damped opening action:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-6.jpg

That cup-holder (to the left) had awful plastic quality. Apparently, the white sticker means its a pre-production piece. Can't these things be sorted before an exhibition? You're supposed to put your best foot forward at such events:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-6b.jpg

All of 5 buttons for the front cabin lamp! This includes a button for the mood lighting. Funky design, it's like a plastic cover over the plastic lamps:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-7.jpg

Smartkey with lock / unlock buttons (no boot release):
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-8a.jpg

The back. Blue makes it look funky, no?
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-8b.jpg

2.4L diesel had all-black interiors. Vid6639 is pretty sure beige will be offered on customer cars:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-9.jpg

Black looks good, but that veneer design is straight out of the eighties!
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-10.jpg

Rear doorpad with wood finishing & lots of brown. Bottle holder + storage pocket here too:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-10b.jpg

Legroom has improved over the already-spacious ol' Innova! These seats offer enormous comfort, including A+ under-thigh support. Middle row has ISOFIX (for child seats), while all Innova passengers get 3-point seatbelts (even the 3rd row):
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-11.jpg

Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-11b.jpg

Fold-out food trays with a cup-holder. They can hold 10 kg (trust Toyota to over-engineer these things). See the lever on top of the front passenger's seat? That seat can be adjusted from the back, if more legroom is desired:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-12b.jpg

The chauffeur-driven seth (or college going dude ) can set it up for 'bed mode':
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-13.jpg

Our supermodel is never one to resist posing for the camera! He has room to spare and remember, this is a 6-footer we're talking about!
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-14.jpg

Fold-out cupholders on the side of the captain seats:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-14b.jpg

Likeable layout of the rear air-con & lights:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-15.jpg

These aren't merely rear a/c vents. It's climate control (you can also set the air flow volume & temperature). Has a display too. Vents appear to be a straight lift off the current Innova:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-16.jpg

A closer look at the blue mood-lighting & cabin lamps:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-17.jpg

The mood lighting. Vid6639 says there are lights everywhere in this car!

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

1-touch tumble down action for the middle row:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-18.jpg

The last row:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-19.jpg

If you need to fit a taller occupant here, you'll need to slide the middle row forward. Still, very usable. Backrest has an adjustable recline:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-20.jpg

Grab handles for the last row:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-21.jpg

1-touch action to fold away the 3rd row seats (just pull the strap once). With all seats in place, the boot is still good for a couple of cabin bags. The tail-gate is a soft-closing door:
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-22.jpg

Guess what this is?
Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016-23.jpg

It's the headrest for the middle passenger!

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Aah, just what i have been waiting for.
The new Innova to go through the careful eyes of TBHPians. Can't wait for the preview and official road test.

Here is my post on the Innova scoop thread regarding ACI news on the engine front.
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian...ml#post3905005

Senior BHPians, any such lil' birdie news regarding the 2.8l being offered for the indian Innova??? Would be a smash performer, especially since the Innova can put to use all those power on the road unlike the Fortuner with high CG.

EDIT: Oops. sorry. Just now saw the 6th pic of the 2.8 badge in the Innova.

So the 2.8l version is surely confirmed.

Also ACI had said that the Innova will be getting the 2.7l instead of the 2.0l petrol engine.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Just love the new Innova! Can't wait for it to be launched.

Few things I am worried about are:
  • Automatic may not be offered in the 2.4 version and may just be kept for the 2.8 version
  • Haven't seen any display vehicle in the 8 seater layout. This is very important for me personally. Any news / clarity on this?
  • Given that we will get the 2.8 I hope pricing remains a little sane especially for the automatic variants. Also hoping automatice is offered across the range

Still all said and done I love what Toyota has done with this one! Who knows I may just add another Innova to the garage since the Vento has been sold and I am on the lookout for a replacement!

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Looks like miles ahead of the current Innova. Somehow, the dash looks too busy to me! The curves and the screen is like ON-THE-FACE!

Am sure it'll be a hot seller; thanks to Toyota for not being a kanjoos this time.

The Face Looks like new gen Toyota Highlander. Rear also to some extend.
But the side view, there are not major changes

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

First of all - great work by the chaps who seem to be covering the Expo. There is a great new post every few hours and it is uniformly excellent.

Now, the car - that looks like most practical of cars for long drives. It ticks all the boxes in terms of comfort, leg space and the seats have more adjustment options than Jim Carrey's contortionist's face. Hope they don't price it in the stratosphere. The only downside is that the wooden bits look a bit dated.

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Whats the power output from both the diesels? The current 2.4 diesel in notorious for spinning too fast on the highway partly due to the power and torque it makes and partly due to short gearing.

I think you meant the current 2.5 diesel mate .

As per Wikipedia, the power outputs of the two new diesel engines are as below. Not sure if the tuning of these engines will remain the same for India however.

Quote:
The 1GD-FTV is a 2.8L (2755cc) straight-4 common rail diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger and Intercooler. It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design. Its compression ratio is 15.6:1. Bore x stroke is 92.0 mm x 103.6 mm. It generates 177 horsepower (132 kW) at 3400 rpm, and 450 newton metres (330 lbf·ft) of torque at 1400-2600 rpm when mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, depending on target market and emission specifications. With manual transmission, outputs are 177 horsepower (132 kW) and 420 newton metres (310 lbf·ft). Average fuel consumption (in JC08 method) is 11.2 km/l.

The 2GD-FTV is a 2.4L (2393cc) straight-4 common rail diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger, intercooler and VVT-i.[3] It has 16 valves and a DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design. Its compression ratio is 15.6:1. Bore x stroke is 92.0 mm x 90.0 mm. It generates 149 horsepower (111 kW) at 3400 rpm, and 400 newton metres (300 lbf·ft) of torque at 1600-2000 rpm when mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, depending on target market and emission specifications. My bad. Thanks for the correction. I know the 2.8 liter as it is the same engine here right from Hilux to new Fortuner to the LandCruiser Prado but wasn't sure about the 2.4. Apparently 140 odd bhp is plenty powerful along with 400nm of torque for the Innova give the current version is 100 odd bhp and almost half the torque and yet does not feel underpowered.

Nice coverage. Thanks to Vid6639 and GTO.
Like the design and "Before May 2016" is not a long wait for me to get this into my list for evaluation. I am just looking for the AT option and am hoping its available in 2.4L itself to go little easy on the wallet !

Re: Toyota Innova Crysta @ Auto Expo 2016

Thanks a lot for the detailed coverage. Was waiting eagerly for this. Before May 16 is the best news. Its like the Altis they launched in last auto expo, car was launched before May 14 that time.

Finally AT Innova is here. The interior dashboard doesnt look exciting, looks like old beemers from 80s. The color pattern of Orange, is that standard? Looks very sad.

Whats the power & torque for these India specific versions?

I could see battery having plug connectors, I guess thats some setting for autoexpo.

The designer. perhaps, would be an ardent fan of the Ecosport and the Scorpio. He used design cues for the front grill and the rear styling from them.
