Dear Ym-enjn (Jaipur BHPian) - I am busy now, will reply to you by tomorrow. Please do not purchase tyres till then.

Dear Shahnawaz - ignorance is bliss applies to most countries. However in the West, the regulations are so sringent that trash is kept out by law. Believe me, I know what all we go through. You have a unique Gypsy. See what all you went through to get exactly what you wanted inside the axle. And please count how many people actually helped you? You will get the answer yourself.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

I’m planning for buying set of Jeep Rims (steel) for offroad purposes.

Is the below rims better than Gypsy 15” rim?
The Offroad Rims & Tyres Thread-wheels.jpg
Secondly let me know if I wanted to go for 16” rim which one is the best for Mahindra Classic (No Alloy suggestions)

That's really surprising. One of my friends here in bangalore has JK Brute 4x4 on his MM540 and he really 'curses' the tyres. (and they are very new & less used) I have seen them struggle on slightest sight of slush. Infact he is so pissed with these tyres that he is thiking of buyiong a new 'proper' off-road tyre set.

Now am wondering what could the issue be.!!!

Fancy Stuff

Hi Guys,

Since I don't know any Tyre Dealers who wear "Tight Tees and Earrings"

I would suggest the following for a CJ3B
1) 7.00X16 NDMS
2) Maxxis Trepador 235-75-15
3) BFG AT/KA 235-75-15.

From my experience 235-75-15 (29") is the ideal size for a CJ3B/CJ340/CL340, Without affecting the turning radius and wheel down force and weight.

Infact the export model CJ340/CL340 were shod with 10R15 (255-70-15) General Grabber/Goodyear AT or 7.50X16 Firestone MT.

The American military export CJ3B (M606) were fitted with 7.00X16 NDCC on a 4.27:1 diff-ratio.

For a Mahindra Great Escape, the "Fancy Stuff" will not be required....hell even 4WD is not required .

Regards,

Arka

Yes, that's true. What he meant was that since they (brute 4x4 tyres) don't perform well on OTR's don't sell them but use them as 2nd set for Highway/Bad Road use. My friend has bought an extra set of wheels to put in proper A/T or M/T tyres that will be used only for OTR's.

HI trammway,
what rims are these and how wide they are? I guess the advantage with the gypsy rim is it is cheap and can comfotably handle tyre of 235 width. Barring alloys and the OE rims of the 540's, i think the only available option in 16 inch will be the army rims. Don't know whether they will be suitable for classic.

My personal favorites are Goodyear Wrangler M/T R. But I do not have any idea about its price, availability or suitability to my Jeep. And also that everyone suggested not to go for MT as I will do highways from Jaipur to NCR for OTR.

But keeping two set of rims and tyres is good idea.

PS: OTR is Off the Road- right?

I have CJ 340 with stock steel rims. Have 235/75/R15 tyres on them. But these are hitting the leaf springs which I turn to the right or left extremes. Have to go a negative offset rims. Which one should I go. Will gypsy wheels suffice. I dont have the manna to go for Alloys now. Please suggest.

I doubt if the gypsy wheels will serve the purpose. I had 235/75/15 on stock gypsy rims and they used to touch the leafs at L/R extremes.

Then can some one here throw light on what can be done to solve this issue. I am really struggling with the problem that my turning radius is more than that of a TATA BUS without PS

PS is no way going to help you to decrease the turning radius, PS is just to make you puting less effort to turn the steering wheel. You need to increase the track and the easiest way to put the wheel which has nagative offset (i.e. the PCD plate should be not in the center, instead a bit in inner side).

The orignal tyre size for the 340 is F78-15, which is close to 205/75R15 metric. You may want to change your axle ratios if you go in for substantially larger tyres.
