6.5 to 7.5 lakhs is what I can pay.

6 to 7.5 lakh is my limit, I think. Beyond that I would either not bother at all, restore one and mod it or buy some other vehicle. I consider many items I have seen posted on this thread to be SUV items that do not have universal appeal for people considering what is basically an off road machine. SUV items detract from my idea of a simple rugged mm540 with stone-reliable mechanicals. If people want leather upholstry, GPS, air, home entertainment system, hot and cold running beer, let them add it aftermarket.

A mm540 with 5 speed, mdi3200tc or the new Bolero CRDi, limited slip, disc brakes, good rubber. I would expect to pay 5.5 to 6.5 lakh for this "bare bones" model and I base my price on the price of the Bolero Camper and Pik-up which are similarly equipped.

Completely agree with Dan. All the electronic bells and whistles can be added by people who need it.

just a curious thought.

What ifF

We buy a used 540 [50K odd]
1. Plonk a new Bolero engine [94bhp] costing around max 2 L
2. All bells and whistles [another 2L max]
3. AT / NDMS tyres [50K max]

We land up at 5L, so maybe 5L would be the max price you guys should think about!

Ofcourse, I dont think beyond 50K

good thought,
But the the C section chassis and suspension and steering cannot handle the additional speed and also the brakes need to be ungraded. So, now put in the cost of NGCS chassis and suspension with upgraded brakes and steering system, now calculate

very simple for me ....MM540/MM550 body shell (MOST IMPORTANT for me...the classic Jeep looks) + complete mechanicals of the current Major 4x4 = my dream offroader at 5.5 lakhs OTR Chennai.

Kuttapan, we also need to take a reality check on the profitability of selling a 50 year old design on a 50 year old chassis, powered by a souped-up tractor engine and with an equipment level that makes an 800 look like a Rolls Royce. Mahindra makes a massive amount of $$$ on the Majors. Remember, cost has little to do with the way that manufacturers price these cars.

Applicable to most new cars then. The differential value is in the Jeep being factory built that way and delivered brand new.

I agree Sir, in this issue. But what maybe M&M needs to address is the silly reliability issues built into the vehicle as it is delivered "brand" new!

Here's how I understand all these posts.

Backbone of the jeep, essentials required. This would be common to the entire proposed range.

1) 4x4,
2) Modern diesel engine (silent reliable, water resistant)
3) Boosted Disc brakes, (waterproof)
4) Rust proof body & chassis
5) Limited slip differentials.
6) Power steering.
7) Power take off points for Winches, head laps, fog lamps,
8) Roll cage (v v important).
9) Diff and gear box guard (underbody protection).
10) Radial tyres (OTR/Road tyres) else region specific.
11) Independent front suspension.

Model differentiators. say Maruti type Lxi, Vxi, Zxi type model differentiators.
1) Airconditioning with hard top
2) Hard doors, (with hard top)
3) Alloy Wheels,
4) Power windows,
5) Bells and whistles like GPS,
6) Winch provision (dealer option)
7) Snorkels (intake breather pipe , exhaust snorkel, battery breather incorporated so that battery does not short under water.)

Top end.
1) Auto matic LSD, ABS.
2) Lux interiors (Wrangler type)
3) Projector head lamps
4) EBS (Electronic brake system, off road capability switchable.)
5) Air bags
6) Towing winch. = seldom used in civilian applications. (save the 2~ 5 kg weight per vehicle X no of vehicles sold = savings.
7) Auto leveling device.
8) Hydraulic jacks built into the chassis for raising the live axles for off road assistance, so that the vehicle can move ahead if stuck.
9) On board tyre pressure monitors & regulators (for off roading on sand).

Hope this hits the nail

Cheers
M M

Dear Behram,

When mahindra has phased out the 540, how come we are not looking at at a 550, with the wish list,

i suppose the new generation chasis will be great,

So, go ahead and put your thoughts across. All the best. Let's see.

My experience with Power steering wasn't great, I still remember seeing Pats Scorpio at the Ooty trip no way the driver knew where the wheels were facing,

How come no LSD in the front diff,
You still like the XD3P ??????

that's for now,

Best Regards

Vinay: 540/550 is only the difference in theoretical seating capacity. Nothing to do with the NGCS.
