Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Rather than the sticky foul sheets wouldn't the white quilted sheets from Blaupunkt be more useful ?

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Unboxing the UnoMinda damping sheet box.

So, today I went shopping for these. My DIY project was to install these beneath the SS kitchen sink and see the difference it makes when I drop a spoon in the sink. First I went to few accessories shops who are well known for audio upgrade and dampening work. They showed me the stuff of 2~3 brands but won’t sell them loose. They quoted for the whole job as a package. Some brands had a strong smell of Bitumen (asphalt). Then luckily I found a dealer for Jopasu and UnoMinda; they only sells but do not install, perfect, but they too won’t sell loose sheets so I had to purchased the whole box.

Specifications
* 2.2 mm Butyl compound (completely odourless)
* 10 sheets, each sheet measuring 70 x 50 cms
* Total 42 sq feet.

I had a tough time carrying this around

Each sheet has a single fold, unfolded it measures 70 x 50 cms

10 sheets per box. Total 42 sq feet.

I will provide an update as and when I put these beneath my kitchen sink and then on the boot floor of my car

How much did the set cost? I'm also looking to buy some dampening sheets as apart of audio upgrade on my old Chevy Sail UVa, but 12k for covering the doors seems too much, especially when that can be spent in resolving other issues in my car..

These are made of butyl compound which is completely odourless and are heavy. These are good only for suppressing harmonic low frequency noise (freq below 150 Hz that propagates mostly through the metal chassis).

Past few days I have done some research and also have been visiting a friend of mine who runs a denting/painting garage, just to observe other cars that have been stripped down. I could see the spots where the OEM has installed noise damping material inside and outside the car cabin. Based on my observations I have purchased a lot of other damping material which is meant to attenuate mid and higher noise frequencies. I will be posting the details soon

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Hi Folks,

Quest for reducing cabin noise in my Honda Elevate!

Hi Folks,

I am a new member, this happens to be my first post, and I request your valuable advise.

I own a Honda Elevate ZX MT for little over a year and have clocked 12k kms with it. Now, the cabin noise at highway speeds is really irritating me. My wife and I both feel that the cabin noise is tiresome over long drives. My 2012 i10 was way quieter with CC6 tyres, my FIL's 2018 manufactured cars Creta SX MT & i10 Grand MT have great cabin insulation.

As we use our car 70% on highways, I had been thinking of selling the Elevate since the cabin noise is an issue to us and IMO a big disadvantage of this car.
Been to showrooms again and was considering other cars XUV700 and Safari (Safari happens to be my childhood crush since I first saw it in the year 1998). But, the math doesn't sum up well and hence I re-considered exploring damping/deadening solutions.

Did a certain online reading (includes this thread), watched related content in youtube, spoke to another Elevate owner who is an audiophile (damping done from AutoCorsa) and hoping to find solutions, I finally decided to step into a premium shop called AutoCorsa in South Bengaluru.
They majorly deal in premium audio upgrades, leather upholstery and damping solutions. Dr. Artex is the brand that they sell.

I decided to take an estimation for getting the 4 doors, boot door, boot floor - vibration damped, and passenger floor - vibration+sound damped.
Below is what the estimate looks like (all Dr. Artex products):

1. Passenger floor (footwells): Quattro 3.8 mm, 01 box = ₹25,990
2. Other parts of passenger floor, boot floor, 4 doors and boot door: Gold HD 2.6 mm, 06 boxes = ₹1,13,940 (₹18,990 per box)
3. Passenger floor (sound damper): VibroBarrier 7 mm, 01 box = ₹15,990
4. Red Wind 2018 (silicon door sealer): 01 box (04 door, 20 mtr) = ₹14,990
5. Labour (03 days' work) = ₹25,630

Total = ₹1,62,334 (includes a 20% discount)

Each box of these vibration dampers come with about 08 sheets, making a total of roughly 56 sheets for the estimated quantity of 7 boxes. These stuff would easily add a little over 100 kilos of well distributed weight to the car.
For the high cabin noise levels in Elevate, I was okay to get this done but again given the price, somewhere in my mind there still is a doubt - "Is it really worth it?". Esp. after reading the damping costs posted in this thread over the last 4-5 years, in facebook forums etc..

The shop guys are really nice, accomodative and experts - multiple times I asked the person, if the estimated material quantities are correct and to which he kept saying that it's taken from a customer who had recently got a similar work for Elevate. Also, he mentioned that they have seen many small uncovered openings in the doors of Elevate that might also add to increase the cabin noise and such spaces need to be sealed thoroughly. Plus the inside panel of doors will have to be damped from right below the weather strip without any gaps so that, water drains out easily. The wastage happens to be on higher side but, itseems they do utilize wastage to damp miscellaneous areas (e.g. exposed bootom part of firewall). He also assured me that if the actual consumed quantity of sheets are less, they will definitely not bill such leftovers from the estimated quantity. The shop guys are professionals, no doubt in that.

My main concern was rust formation from moisture being trapped in between the sheet and metal surface if the job is improperly executed. Hence, I considered getting an estimate from a premium store/shop.

Fortunately, my membership got approved in the previous evening and I would like to sincerely request the experts/non-experts here to please advise on this matter - is it this expensive to get a professional damping done?

I feel it is certainly expensive considering the price of the car, the weight being added and overall benefit outcome.

Thank you!

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

I went to Autocorsa as well for my 5th Gen Honda City. They were very helpful and explained what they do differently in great detail. Most people only use the butyl rubber material and charge for the product and the application. I believe Autocorsa does a layer of Butyl Rubber, Foam, and Vinyl along with covering the door handles with rubber beading which insulates from the air and noise from what I remember. I did not end up going ahead with it at the time. The youtube video below explains the difference in Db readings with application of butyl rubber, foam, and MVL. The video shows the difference after each layer is added as well. Hope this helps.
