Re: The Great Ipod Thread - All Ipod and MP3 player related threads are merged here.

Finally I replaced my 4 year old iPod Classic with an iPod Touch 16GB.
It came with iOS 6 out of the box. Setting it up was easy and quick.
It even supports wireless sync where your laptop and the iPod should be connected to the same wifi network and you can transfer songs via iTunes.

The iPod is too slim and I'm getting used to the volume buttons on the side.

I bought the 4th gen 16 gig white version from Alfa. Got it for 14,400 with bill + Sennheiser HD218 worth 2k free.

Will post a detailed review soon.

I have an iPod Touch, 5th gen. Yesterday I opened Google Maps without wifi, and it was accurately showing my location . Even Apple maps was accurate. I understand that it doesn't have GPS, then how does the location work on the the touch?

Re: The Great Ipod Thread - All Ipod and MP3 player related threads are merged here.

Is there anyway to recover a deleted file from internal storage of a mp3 player ?

I have a Sansa Clip+, and accidentally deleted an audio recording. The deletion was from Windows explorer. I have tried many different recovery utilities, but none of them are able to even locate the file.

All these utilities actually show the files that can also be seen via explorer (the un-deleted files).

None of the utilities show the deleted files.

I have tried MSC mode also.

Thanks, Amol
but no luck.

this one only shows the HDD itself & one logical drive on the HDD. It does not even show the mp3 player.

Note: the MP3 player storage shows in Explorer, but does not show as a drive in Explorer

Re: The Great Ipod Thread - All Ipod and MP3 player related threads are merged here.

Guys i have been using my itouch (4th Gen) as my primary music player for 3 years now , have been satisfied with it so far and created numerous playlists on it , now last week suddenly after syncing (i manually manage music) , it deleted all my playlists , pissed so much at it , i completely abandoned it , got a flash drive instead and am now naming songs in sequence (01,02...) and creating a playlist this way.
Is there a way to prevent that from happening in the future and retain all my playlists on my itouch or am i right in abandoning it in favor of a flash drive (it was being used as a flash storage anyways,i just connected it via usb with my car H.U) , the good part was it used to play aac, alac formats too but my car audio system doesn't support either via flash storage now!

Difficult to understand that. How else are you able to see the contents of the player?

Windows is phunny in this regard. If you noticed the confirmation challenge when you asked it to delete files from the player, it would have said "Permanently delete files?". If the drive is external, Windows doesn't move it to Recycle Bin - it simply marks it 'Deleted' (saar, the old DOS method?)!!!

On Mac OS X, the Trash folder stays on the same drive as the original files. The free space of the storage doesn't increase when one deletes files. Space is freed up only when files are purged from Trash.

Use a Disk Utilities application (not the Windows one, but something like what @amolbh suggested). If you are lucky (and you haven't added files after that), it should be able to figure out the deleted files.

No idea what caused this , i just added a couple of songs , ejected the ipod and all the playlists were gone from the ipod.

I was talking about is Cruze's stock unit , it played all the AAC songs which i purchased from itunes store , as well as all the lossless songs i encoded from CDs (to ALAC) off my ipod via USB , but it doesn't play the same off a USB drive.

Even my city's H.U doesnt play all the AAC songs off a USB drive. (All of them are itunes plus 256kbps VBR AAC , so if it can play one it should play all , but it doesnt)

As long as the contents are listed (selecting it in the left pane), you should be able to move/copy files to/from the Clip. It really doesn't matter whether a drive letter is assigned or not - that was the old method. If the USB handler has the necessary device driver for your device, it will show the contents the way they were intended to be seen as. My Garmin unit also shows up like that when connected.

No, it's always been this way. I can navigate into either directories (internal / external) to access files.

The problem is not about how to access the files. It is about trying to recover a deleted file ..

I have deleted one file. I need to recover that. I have tried a few utilities, but not able to find this one. The utilities that "seem" to allow recovery only show existing files, but not the deleted file.

Is there any way to recover ?

Note:
When I select any single file & hit delete, I get a warning message if I want to permanently delete the file.

Note-2:
I am mentioning the above point about the warning if it helps to give any clues on how the file storage / deletion happens.

"Permanently delete ..." is the pointer to the fact that the file will not be moved to Recycle Bin (Win), as Windows neither creates a 'Recycle bin' on a pendrive / card, nor can it (design philosophy) copy the file to the Recycle Bin on the main hard disk of the machine. [Macs create a Trash on the pendrive - hidden directory called '.Trash' so that Undelete can be done on pendrives]

On Windows, 'deletion' just amounts to replacing the first character of the file name with 0xe5, with everything else including data being retained. The retention is only until the next instance of file creation, when that FAT entry with 0xe5 is overwritten with the new file name.

In case you have copied a file onto the pendrive after deleting, there is a high chance that old file entry is gone. Some recovery software allow occupied data clusters not associated with other files to be brought out for creating a recovery file.

Assuming you have not written on that pendrive after deleting that file, keep trying - one or the other utility will be able to recover your data.

Der Alte ji, I am familiar with the basics of file deletion & recovery. I have put in some effort towards trying to recover, but have not been successful. That's when I posted the query here, hoping for a specific answer from anyone who may have successfully recovered deleted files from mp3 recorder-players.

In that case, I think you should wait for a more specific answer before trying anything else.

Just to mention it, hardly anyone is likely to have been in the same situation. One usually copies from a copy kept somewhere, so that they don't have to bother about file loss. But I definitely sympathise with your situation. Shit happens!
