Re: Queries in 'Ask the gurus' section

Here is my current setup. Seek your advice on my idea

1. Your Car: Mahindra Scorpio LX Mhawk 2.2

2. Your current setup (If any):
Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-2290 USB / CD / MP3
Front Speakers (on the door) - Pioneer TSG 1013 4"
Rear Speakers (On the rear / tailgate door) - JBL GTO 947

3. Your Budget: 12 k when the installation was done 4 years back

4. Do you drive most of the time or is it chauffer driven? Self driven

5. Your Music preferences (Genres, favorite artists, etc.):
Mix of everything. I love country music, pure rock (non-heavy metal), Indian Film music, Classical music - Carnatic / Hindustani. Love to have a more balanced sound staging.

Additional Information:

6. Are you ready to sacrifice your boot space/modify door panels? :
Not ready to sacrifice boot space, but can look at modifying door panels

3. Description of the problem:
I am not happy with the sound setup currently.

I am now thinking about mounting the 4" speakers in the factory provisioned speaker place (only 4" would fit in there) and how about moving the JBL GTO to the front or rear doors.

I would like to go in for a tweeter mounted on the front doors.

Any suggestions / recommendations welcome. Thanks in advance

Diwakar

Go ahead and solder it back. Before you do that, take it out if you can, carefully. Scrape the leads clean with a sharp knife, tin the leads immediately. insert it back into the PCB pads and resolder.

Discard the 4" speakers - they are the weakest link as they don't produce low-end at all.

Get a pair of good 6.5" components, like Infinity Primus or Reference, JBL 609C, Auditor, Bull, Morel etc. Ask an installer to create 2 fiber glass pods that can be fitted on the doorpads. He will have to use 2 MDF spacers - 1 to mount the pod on the doorpad (needs to be removed; screws mounted from inside) and 1 to mount the speaker. Mount the pod concentric with the existing 4" location on door pad. The pod will jut out about 2-3" outside the doorpad, but will not cause any problems.

The midbass can be mounted in these pads, and the tweeters either inside the ORVM (preferred), A-pillar (about 3" above the dash top) or the doorpad (IF the tweeters come with a tilting mount).

Should cost you 6-6.5K for both. This should produce the most impact on the sound.

DerAlte, thanks for the recommendation. I will check the details out and get back if I have any more doubts.

One basic question. The JBL GTO's at the rear are mounted on the door. Is that the good place considering that the door is opened every day by my office security and it is closed. I am just worried about the occasional hard closures by inexperienced people. Would it impact the speakers in any way.

Nah, don't worry. Just check once if the mounting screws are tight. There is no other place you can mount them.

Re: Queries in 'Ask the gurus' section

Hi ICE Gurus,

One of my friend wants to install Pioneer - FH X759BT Head Unit in his i10 Magna. Does this unit fit well or does it needs any modification interms of space?

Thanks,
Greg

It will fit alright, but he would require a fascia adapter for it. It is an FRP moulded piece which covers the gaps when one puts a regular 2DIN aftermarket HU in place of the OE integrated HU.

Re: Queries in 'Ask the gurus' section

Hi, I was looking for a basic BT enabled head set for my Reva. I came across these 2 VFM options on snapdeal;
http://www.snapdeal.com/product/pion...846?pos=27;253

http://www.snapdeal.com/product/pion...207?pos=53;253

Are these good to buy and since the difference is hardly Rs. 100 in non-CD & CD, I'd rather buy with CD player, is there any catch in these models that I am not able to see, please guide.

I am buying a basic unit also since it will be playing a pair of 6x9 Sony fixed in box speaker just kept in the rear seat (had the speakers from my old car, were practically new so retained them), as there is no option of fixing 6x9 nor any provision for front door speakers in my car, how to go about this, suggestions are most welcome on this issue too. Thank you.

Keep the boxes on the parcel shelf (above the engine).

Thank you DerAlte. Will go ahead with the with CD option.

The Boxes don't fit in the Parcel shelf without folding the rear seat, the space is too small, but it doesn't matter, will keep the rear seat folded or just keep the boxes on the rear seat.

What kind of boxes are those? Most of the readymade boxes for 6x9 ovals fit with the longer side parallel to the rear glass.
