Electric cars are the future, they said..
Jokes apart, unless electricity is produced in extremely large scale using unconventional sources (solar, air, wind etc) pollution would just shift from one place to another.
Disposal of used batteries would be the next challenge.

Absolutely right!
An electric vehicle is a means for energy independence -- not necessarily pollution avoidance. One of the main benefits of electric cars is that they can be powered by any resource that generates electricity. When you purchase an electric car, your fuel doesn’t come from a petrol pump – it comes from the electric grid.
In the United States, the sources to electric power in the grid are: natural gas 35%, coal 27%, renewable sources 19% (hydropower 7%, wind energy 7%, biomass 2%, solar energy 2%, geothermal 1%) & nuclear 19%. [Source:

However, in India, the dependance is: coal 44%, biomass 23%, petroleum 23%, natural gas 6%, nuclear 1%, hydroelectric 2%, other renewable sources 1% [Source:

Without investing in sufficient infrastructure to generate clean electricity, investment in electric cars will lead to more pollution and expensive travel in India. The efficiency of conversion from petrol/ diesel to motive power is much higher than conversion from petrol/ diesel to electricity; then electricity to motive power.
