Some posts on the net suggest setting focus to infinity when shooting landscapes (using tripod and long shutter speeds, IFRC). How to set focus to infinity? Is it landscape mode? (cause i think its the only mode that doesn't focus on anything)

Focus to infinity - Point the camera to the blue sky and focus it and lock it. Did you get why they are asking for long shutter speed? I have a reason there they want you to use high Aperture numbers say 22 else if you have f/8 and long shutter speed say even a 1/20 for a sunset you will have a overexposed image. So long shutter speed with higher f number for Depth of field or the large area in focus(May be the reason why you get sharper images). Caution if you are setting longer shutter speed and if clouds are moving at a faster rate then that may ruin the image Hope I drove my point across. Gurus correct me if am wrong. Quote:
yes aperture priority lets me shoot in RAW, but I'm unsure on how to use it.
set the aperture low(highest number) then focus and shoot, right?
that will give me maximum depth of field right?
and I can let the camera worry about shutter speed and ISO
I shall try that on my next outing.
can you confirm if I've got the right idea?

In Aperture mode camera will calculate the shutter speed depending on Aperture and ISO set by you. Same goes with Shutter priority mode camera calculates the aperture as we choose the Shutter Speed and ISO as per our requirment. Remember you need to choose which Aperture and ISO and leave shutter speed to camera
Now its up to you to decide what kind of DOF you need. for e.g in thos yellow flower pic, if you just want the first flower to be in focus you should use high Aperture(i.e lower f number say f/4 or f/5.6 etc). If you want other flowers to be in focus you should use lower Aperture(I.e high f number say f/20 f/22 etc.) One thing to be kept in mind. As the Aperture decrease shutter speed should be low too. So here tripod pops in. Quote:
another doubt,
if the aperture setting decides how much of the scene is in focus, what does the manual focussing on the lens do? choose which part of the scene is in focus?
|
You got that partial right Aperture decides how much of the scene to be in focus.
Where as the focusing on the lens decides which part to focus on.
Its auto focusing on the lens that focus the subject on its own. In Manual focusing we manually get the subject into focus.
Hope I did not mis any point and clear in my explainations.
Guys correct me if am not .
