HDR help

Guys I need some help. Am trying to master HDR like a nut since 2 days. Working with photomatix and noiseware. These are the 2 results.

With cars, its okish. But with light, its weird. The halo effect isnt going no matter what I do. As you can see in my second pic with the desktop, beside the bedlamp and on it, u have the weird pattern. Why is that coming? I tried taking some shots yesterday night of the road and the headlight trails of the cars came in a harsh shade of purple and what not. How do I handle these light issues?

The first car picture is ok but it doesn't give an HDR look, there are very dark areas where the details are missing - ideally an HDR should have all of them showing.

The second picture looks a bit posterized - could you explain how you made it? It may help in figuring out what went wrong. I like the mood of that picture

@furioussphinx - Don't know why, but I like the second picture.

Managed to shoot this after the rain. It was drizzling, so borrowed my friend's umbrella to shoot the pictures.

Start of another hard day ! (Slightly different from my usual: 300mm, 1/2500 sec, ISO 800, f/5.6, because they were walking very fast)

Ranjith, when you are shooting closeups, the sharpness is important. These pics are not very sharp, may be shaken. Try to get at least some part of the shots in absolute focus and not shaken. It changes the whole effect.

An example:

Not sure what you were trying, but can you explain what you did. Also look at exensions available in GIMP for combining three images as HDR or taking a single image and improving it with HDR effect.

the most tedious (and accurate) method would be to manually stitch images of various exposures.

slightly OT, looks like your sky was leaking and developed a spot

Had a very very tiring day on Sunday. There was an event/competition organized by a company called infinityF where you would be given 4 main themes (8 sub themes) and you are allowed to submit one photograph per sub-theme, making it 8 in total. The shoot had to happen between 8 am and 8pm on Sunday. The themes were:

Bengaluru Heritage : Old and New
(Participants could try and bring out a sense of juxtaposition/ contrast between the old and new.. how heritage survives in today's times with interesting consequences. Could be either positive or negative)

Lifeline : "Urban Jungle" and 'Fast Pace"
(Participants should try to depict the rapid urbanization of Bangalore and how the fast paced life of Bangalore is changing the city from what it was earlier)

Happens only in Bengaluru: "Metro" and "Water"
(Participants should try to show interesting facets of the Metro construction or its effect on the common man. Also, another photo on the water situation in the city)

Twilight: "Afterwork" and "Shopping@Night"
(Participants should try to show how Bengalurians spend their time after work and also shopping activities in markets and shopping hubs in Bengaluru at night)

So, if you keep seeing stuff related to it from me, kindly bear!

Starting with After work and Bangalore Heritage:

The first photograph (after work) was taken with a cam phone, so kindly pardon the image quality.

The second one was taken with a 50D as my battery gave up half way through.

furioussphinx,

From what I've experienced, HDR works best for the outdoors, especially if its overcast. I would suggest you work towards a mild HDR (1/3 EV stops) initially.
