Shot at 600mm, F4 (+1/3 EV), 1/2500s, ISO 400

Why would you want to use ISO 400 when you already have an excellent shutter speed available?

Superb pics Amol and Nilesh. Durango Dude, your pics are like true picture postcard shots. Very eyecatching.

Though Amol will respond to this in a detailed manner, but this excellent shutter speed is the result of the boosted ISO. And with a 600mm f/4 you can't afford even a teeny-weeny bit of a shake.

This was shot during an evening safari where light conditions keep changing inside the forest with sunlight and shade. The higher ISO helps in ensuring decent shutter on most occasions, especially when time is critical.

In this shot if ISO 200 would have been okay since the shutter would have been 1/1250 or so, but ISO 100 would have been a hit or miss situation with the 600mm lens.

Thanks for the explanation. I've been in this situation a few times. But I had an older DSLR and every bump in the ISO brought in a lot of noise. Hence my question!

Yep, I know exactly what you're saying, been there myself!

When you choose the ISO it's more on the basis of what your camera can manage with little or no noise. I usually don't go beyond ISO 800 on the 7D while the 1D can be easily stretched to 1600 for the evening safari. Morning safaris don't usually require anything beyond ISO 400 unless its heavily overcast. Correcting heavy noise will result in loss of IQ even with the best PP software.

Another thing is that longer lenses need faster than the general 1/(focal length) shutter speed to make sure its perfectly sharp. Even if you have a bean bag for support there are enough vibrations because of other people in the safari vehicle etc.

So typically I choose to pair the 600mm with the 1D and 7D with the 70-200 2.8 to get faster shutters for wildlife shooting. That way I can use both bodies in harmony with their ISO capabilities.

Navarasam series :)

Thanks to R2D2 and Shaju fx for the appreciation. Another Swiss Picture Postcard and ornate ceiling of the Vatican Museum. Resizing is tiring and also quality gets reduced.

Took a stroll in a park in Pune on Sunday. Spotted this bird dozing happily in the middle of the pond. Anyone knows what bird is this?

EDIT: One of my friends told me that this is called "Black Crowned Heron".

The pond is overcrowded with Lotuses. Liked the color on this bud particularly.

I sorely miss the like/thank button. @Ajay Satpute; Good pics and as I have also realised today's bridge camera's like yours and mine are good enough for every day photography and results are good and also using the phenomenal Optical Zoom is a breeze. My contribution is a 'kite' that paid me a visit at home.

That's a Shikra you got there, it's a smaller sized bird of prey!

Quite a sharp cropped image I must admit. You could also try and reduce the color noise to get a smoother background.

Great capture! Shikra looks damn good.

And thanks. I totally agree with you. The bridge cameras offer everything a hobbyist photographer needs. I have also now added a adapter ring and a UV filter. I am going to receive my Macro lens today, with which I can click super macro shots at 30x zoom, without loss of quality or blur. Eagerly waiting for the lens.

Keep clicking!

Cheers.
