Yeah man, you should have seen this with your eyes, i am happy the cam was able to do some justice.

BTW i have picasa on my computer (RAW doesn't open with any other application) and it kinda corrects and saves the images automatically the way it feels. Any RAW viewer?

Pramod
IrfanView with the plugins will allow you to view most of the RAW files.

About RAW file manipulation

@Pramod,

Firstly, you should get the RAW file thumbnailer (Precisely the ARW thumbnailer for Alpha RAW files) for Windows, it will save you a lot of time figuring out which RAW file is which because once this is installed, you get to see the thumbnails of any RAW file without opening it.

Download it from

http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/...raw/index.html

Look at how I see RAW files in my laptop (This is the actual image's thumbnail you're seeing. all look the same because it is the same photograph almost)

Name: Thumbnails.png
Views: 541
Size: 154.2 KB

You can see that it displays thumbnails for even my PSD files created in CS4. Reason: I've got the psd thumbnailer dll registered too.

Secondly, I don't think Picasa is a good RAW file viewer because it makes the RAW file appear a lot duller than it actually is. Do not allow Picasa to open RAW files in its viewer. You can configure it using Picasa Photo Viewer configuration.

I use the good old Windows Photo Gallery to view the RAW files.

The DSLR Thread-rawpreview.jpg

Good RAW editors: (In descending order of my liking)

1) CS4 with Adobe Camera RAW 5.0 - Feature rich & performance
2) RAW Therapee (Free) - Feature rich, but slow
3) Sony Image Data Converter - Feature less - not too fast
4) Picasa - I won't recommend it - Images look bad, feature less

I am sure there are more.

To reduce Image noise, the best software I've used so far is

Noiseware from imagenomic.com. The noise reduction is just perfect. Sad thing is that it cannot directly operate on RAW, but it takes TIFF, JPEG etc.

yes as suggested get RAW thumbnail viewer. Also RAW files work best with the converters provided by the camera maker. Like DPP from Canon. However for convenience i use adobe lightroom. its probably the best organizer and editor built into one

I'm surprised no one's recommending tamron here? They make awesome lens too!

Below are my two main cameras. both have tamrons on them all the time.

You have steady hands! Or is it the IS?

Go for the 1000D if you don't need video

People going to argue with me but i suggest leave both aside and get a 450D if you want to go Canon way and spend rest of the money on the lenses.
I would also recommend the 450D over the 500D because of the price difference. The 500D is just 450D with video recording capability. But I would ask you to go for the 1000D because thats also a wonderful camera and will save you some money which you can use to buy a lens or two. But remember, the more you take pictures, the better the camera!

I mean any camera can be a good one if you know how to use it!

I was contemplating the 1000D with the IS lens, but a lot of people seem to be suggesting that it is hardly an upgrade from point and shoot cameras.
I too would suggest 450D instead of 500D. 450D lacks live view, movie mode and its 12Mp compared to 15MP of 500D. Its got spot metering which 1000D lacks.

Yep i too find light room great if when i have many files to process. Advantage DPP is that it can do peripheral illumination correction, distortion correction, chromatic aberration correction and colour blur correction all based on the Canon lens used (doesn't work with all canon lenses, dint work with 50mm 1.8 mkII works with new gen lenses).

Does it work with 3rd party lenses?

Sunny, VC is working really well i guess. Much better than kit lenses i guess. I like Tamron, prefer this than Sigma. We bought an Axis IP cam, it came with Tamron zoom lens, but manual zoom and manual focussing (Designed to be set and forgotten).

Have you started using your EOS 30? How many rolls over?

After reading lot of review and making myself confused. I have decided to buy used DSLR instead new for practice and experience. Got 2 year old Canon 400D for 300 EUR including default 17-55 lense.

I feel being a beginner it is best to have your hands on used DSLR and depending on the need one can upgrade later

Now its time to explore the DSLR world and learn photography.

300 Euro for a used 400D? Seems to be on the higher side (assuming 300 Euros = US $432).

You can get a refurb XS/1000D for $399 and a refurb XSi/ 450D for $499 - both are offered with the EF-S 18-55 IS lens as a part of the kit offering, and with warranty (US, of course).

I think he is getting a steal considering the 17-55 Canon he is getting with the body.

Am guessing that it is the kit lens (18-55), and 17-55 is a typo...
@pawan_pullarwar, can you confirm if it is 17-55 or 18-55 that you are getting with the camera? Like @Sparkled has said, if it is 17-55, then its a steal!

If you have anyone travelling to the US and back, then...
