"I am planning to buy my first DSLR camera. After going through lot of review on Amazon, so far I have selected Canon EOS 400D DSLR (10 Megapixel) inklusive EF-S18-55 lense. It is costing me 450 EUR which comes to around 30K. Let me know if it is a good deal or shall I buy it from India?"

I would suggest you look around in the grey market. You should be able to find the 400D for around that price, if not less, here in India itself. I don't know much about Pune but I know in Bangalore grey market, the 400D is available in that price range.

Why a 400D? 450D/500D is newer right?

I am in Germany these days and it is available for 450 EUR in Germany. If the price is same in India I can go for it. Also let me if any better camera with lense is available for the same price.

if you want a super zoom why bother with a DSLR? You can get something like the Sony R1 (now discontinued) or the Fuji S100.

400D is outdated and has been replaced by 1000D. Go for 1000D instead. 1000D costs 26200 rs. here in India with bill and Warranty.

+1

No point buying an overpriced discounted model from abroad. For once a country that overcharges consumers more than India

Boss, I bought the SLR for the quality!! I see no reason why I can't choose convenience as well. Having experienced the 500D (after my S3) I cant go back to P&S!

Tamron 18-270mm is a decent lens but with obvious pitfalls that accomplish Super Zooms.

Sure you can choose convenience but don't forget this convenience comes with a bag full of pitfalls.

Distortion, Pincushion, CA are a few to name and remember slow focus and lower IQ.

400D was replaced with 450D and then 500D. 1000D is lower on the pyramid than a 400D.

Cheers

Trust me. It is always much costlier in Europe.
Try to get it online from U.S. It would be much cheaper.
BTW, why 400D? it obsolete model I guess. Its not available in India anymore.
You can have 450D and now 500D - the latest at mid range.
Recently someone posted the details of getting 500D damn cheap (at around 36K with kit lens + extra lens) from amazon-japan.
It is cheaper in grey market India too.

In case someone is looking for an entry level DLSR, Canon 1000d is their best bet, with sub 26k pricing its a steal. I procured mine for 25400 Rs with 2 years warranty, free 2 GB card and carry bag.

The S100 has a rather large sensor. I suspect that the S100 will give you almost the quality of a DSLR with a 18-250/270 attached.

Question then is is the "Distortion, Pincushion, CA...slow focus and lower IQ" better than a fixed lens SLR like the S100? I have neither used a 18-250/270 nor the S100 so I cannot passs judgement on this one.

36K is damn cheap. Canon india showing 45K without lense for 500D.

400D is the next model after 1000D. So if I am getting 400D for 30K it is not bad compare to 26K for 1000D

The major difference between 400D, 450D and 500D is pixel and movie.

400D is 10 MP, 450D is 12 MP and 500D is 15MP with Movie can be shooted.

I am not interested in movie shooting. I am beginner but want to buy descent SLR camera for mostly landscap and bird photograpy.

Right now I am using Nikon Coolpix S620 12.2 MP. But Coolpix is not able to capture evening and night shots as it is even if I use tripod and best possbile setup combination.

Can anybody tell me how much important is the Mega Pixel for clear photography? If it doesnt important than 400D is descent buy and if it is important I would go for 500D.

I seriously got no idea which S100 are we talking about here, is this Canon S100 2.1mp digital camera, Minolta S100, Canon S100 L series 8mp camera released in Japan ????

Pixels determine the size of image. It does affect image Quality but these are very complex questions and cannot be answered just like that. Each sensor design is unique and varies from another model.

But a general description could be found here.

Just check out dxomark Sensor test and follow it from there.

Cheers

@pawan: 400D is quite an old model and it's been an year or so since its been phased out so if you're buying new i'd ask you to consider 450D atleast.

D40 has been super seeded for some time now. D3000 is the replacement and D3000 vs 1000D would be better suited discussion.

Thanks
