Since I have seen samples from multiple canon models I disagree. the only canon which has this long exposure noise issue was 50D. Apart from that all were steller.
Which canon cams did you use and see hot pixels?

eBay India: 20pcs Filter Kit for CanonEOS 500D 350D 400D 450D 1000D (item 330391646599 end time 01-Feb-2010 18:24:44 IST)
gov; check if they are selling it for 4-5k less as was advertised by Canon early this week ( maybe it was the price of non-IS lens)

What was advertised was a 1000D with an 18-55 non IS lens for 24k. Govigov has got a better price at 23200/- than what was advertised if he wishes to go for 18-55 non IS lens.
Govigov, 18-55IS lens is much better than non IS lens, so please go for that. Regarding the filter, good quality filter doesn't come cheap, 20 filters for 3300/- bucks is cheap. Instead spend that 3000 bucks for the IS lens.

I know it is of no use for India people. Just wanted to inform you that there is a deal in Germany on Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55 IS + 70-300 = 500 EUR.

Go for IS lense, it really helps.

hiccup. they are out of IS lenses and will only arrive by sat afternoon.
the deal is as follows with the cam shop.
EOS1000D body + 18-55 IS = 27000 (20500 + 6500)
The original offer is for 23500 for non IS lens (non IS lens is bought back for 3000 and 6500 is added for the IS lens)

is this a fair deal?

or as long as you shoot in RAW!
I only shared the issue i felt was a big thing, otherwise i qutie like Alpha series.

Even RAW can't do anything when White balance is off. And i only shoot RAW.

I have experienced/seen Hot Pixels in 5D mk1, 1D mk2, 1D mk3, 1Ds mk3, 40D. Have not used any of the xxxD series so cannot comment on that. However Hot pixels are not hard to clone out. They are just there none the less.

Compared to Nikon, i experienced few Hot pixels with D2x and D80 but none so far with D90, D3 and D3x.

Yep 18-105mm has VR in the lens. Not the newer VR2 though. But its a very good lens.

Cheers

Price of the IS lens is fair at 6500/-, if bought separate the 18-55IS lens costs between 6.7k to 8k based on the prices i've seen. I'm nost sure of the buyback price of 18-55 lens, but 27500/- total sounds like a fair deal.

Pentax Kx has really nice reviews , Price is lower then Canon 1000D but features match 500D. If some one is returning from USA it can be brought f with 18-55 and 55-300 lens for around 750$

Yes, I saw a similar offer on Argos Website for 500 quid ( roughly 37000 rs ) whihc is a very sweet deal considering the lens alone 70-300 is retailed at 240 quid or 18000 rs !

I am new at DSLR cameras and have been thinking of getting one for the last few months and this year I may take the plunge and sort out my photographic skills

I am told the Canon EOS 1000 is the best starter DSLR at 25000 or so. Checked JJ Mehta & Ebay and they all are the same, more or less at prices.

What is your suggestion friends ?

I currently use a Sony Cybershot ( Just for the sake of it ).

But have suddenly decided to go for a DSLR as I want to take a few shots of my kid playing and growing up ( he is only 8 months now ). Also there are a few trips lined up this year and next year ( maybe Ladakh ! ) so that is why the rush.

Thanks

Here is a lateral thought. When your kid is running around, you won't have time to change lenses or compose a shot. Point and shoot (!) might work better for those situations. Not to mention the maintenance that's needed for a DSLR.

After a lot of deliberation I again settled for an advanced prosumer (casio FH25 preordered, yet to be released in US). I specifically wanted HD video. coupled with a 20X zoom, it's a sweet combo of a camcorder and 10 MP still cam. try doing that in a DSLR.

not interested in a long zoom? you got a wider selection from panasonic featuring leica lenses.

No need to change lenses, get a megazoom lens for that purpose. DSLR trumps when it comes to action shots (kid running around) and low light shooting. If not changing lenses maintenance rrequired would be very very ver very less.

Are you suggesting leaving a xx-400mm+ lense on the body permanently? I always thought it will be a portability issue.
