We can unlock most of the USB modems by just updating their firmware.

Unlocking and flashing are two separate things.
on most modems you'll need a flashing code to be able to flash it.

For unlocking HUAWEI modem, we need to enter the flash code. It's successful for me(atleast). Please PM me for flash code.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I have a photon+ dongle but my dialer shows photon Whiz all the time and since the last few days the speeds are worse than a dial up and the connection hangs, disconnects on its own and at times there is no network.

Upon complaint Tata Indicom were prompt in sending their tech person who revealed two things

1. that many customers are paying through their nose for Photon+(for 3.1 Mbps speeds) but are getting only Whiz signals (1X speeds) I pay close to 1100 a month for a 10Gb pack so now I know I have been had what after having paid through my nose compared to what Reliance were asking for their dongle 900 versus 2.5K.

2. There are rampant incidences of customer complaints regarding similar issues being closed by submitting false customer satisfaction feedbacks and though the management is in the know but they are not keen to look in to the matter as apparently per their technical team there is no solution for the same????

Now since after the visit which was a couple of days ago, all I have is a call from customer support saying there's an upgrade going on and things will be like this till January third week. They have no response for the Whiz signals showing up on the photon+ modem's dialler etc. and I trust that my complaint too has been closed, even though I specifically told the customer service guy who called me that the problem remains.

So much for the message of Quality assurance and customer satisfaction by their MD/CEO on the web site. Guys is there a recourse available or should I accept this as yet another nail in the Tata quality coffin and opt for some other service provider.

Don't know about tata, but i had terrible speed issues with reliance and whenever i wanted to close the post paid was assured that speed would improve, this was for 1X speeds only, when last year i gave up and finally paid and closed the connection they still wanted me to stay and would offer 50% discount on upgrade to broadband+, which i denied as i knew it will not happen soon, they said it will be launched in my area in a month or max two, but i kept saying, i don't want this crap speed and finally closed the connection and settled till date bills that time, now its more than a year passed and still no broadband+ in my town yet.

So my point of telling all this is, if you do some serious work online, and can't digest such excuses and don't want to sacrifice your Online happiness for speed it would be better to seek another operator.

there are more than few players in Metros now, so you can ask any one to give you a demo, I am sure when you call and say you are already using X company for long and want to switch, new operator would certainly do its best to please you.

just my 2 cents.

I have been using Reliance Netconnect for a year now and it's been fantastic so far, no problem what so ever, was on Reliance X1 earlier, it was again no problem, but way slower compared to the Netconnect.

I use my usb modem with Airtel and BSNL 3G, but unfortunately BSNL gives 100-200 kbps only in 3G mode, it used to be 3.2mbps till early this year, now that is gone, may be poor network maintenance done or too many users in city now.

AFAIK the idea modem comes in only locked version.

i have got HUAWEI EG 162G which i unlocked my self.

tested on AIRTEL & UNINOR. (only to test)

Yes it should come in locked state only, but seems all the dealers except Idea own shops are selling it only after unlocking.

I needed one for my friend and currently the modem is out of stock and one strange thing is whichever dealer i asked to get me a locked modem gave me a strange look, said everyone getting it unlocked already and you want a locked one ?

No, dont take January humbug as the last word, please do complain, there is a MD Escalation/Nodal Authority link on the indicom website, if not anything else they do refund money in case there is no service available in your location. A friend of mine did get a rental wavier for the days there was no service in his area in Pune. They can very much give rental waviers if not refunds.

Hey Kartikk,

The sequence of events is as follows
No service=> I complain => email acknowledgement of complain => Technician visits & confirms no service at all in Photon+ the device is automatically switching to Whiz & yet no data transfer => follow up phone call giving the January mumbo jumbo and assuring some waiver of post paid rental in the bill for the effected period.

The thing is it is not just about the money. It is about not delivering on service as assured. If it were the money alone I would not have picked up the TATA stick at 2999/- compared to Reliance at 999/- I agreed to pay extra up front and a higher rental based on the perception that TATA will provide a better service than their rivals. However the perception turned out to be just that 'a perception'.

As for the web link for escalation I am sure it is there but after the revelation regarding the TATA Indicom management turning a blind eye at false customer satisfaction feedbacks etc being submitted to close the complaints, I am not interested in treading that path. The fact that they are just using the TATA brand name and pulling in suckers like me in such large numbers that the new connections are growing exponentially and no one is bothered about losing some percentage of old customers. It is a sellers market right now and things are not going to be any different at least in the near future.
