1. Please buy the version that comes in a cardboard box (and not a cd/dvd box) . It comes shrink wrapped with holographic seals etc. This will usually get sold for 600 onwards. They will also give you a VAT bill with their seal etc. (no one is going to sell duplicate stuff with Bill)

2. DO NOT buy any other version. Most of the other stuff is on normal DVD sleeves.

This time round, i bought 2009 which was in a cardboard box. So, looks likle that clue cannot be totally relied upon.

Benbsb29... Yes the 2007 version did.. BUT the 2010 version does not! Even the single user ones come in a smaller cardboard box! (Incidentally for Rs. 400-450) Permit them to change the packaging, try and outfox the crooks yaar...lol. This is information direct form the distributor. You see anything else - its a fake!

In addition, look for the hologram.. and always ask for a BILL.

I use ESET Smart Security 4. It's the best anti-virus. Doesn't slow down the PC too.

Anyone with a Dell supplied McAfee Security Center?
Its subscription for my laptop ends in the next 3 days.
This is what I observed when reaching their renewal payment page:

-A 1 year renewal for Security Center costs Rs. 1986.
There is one more product by McAfee called Total Security 2009
which costs the same. Any benefits of using one over the other?

-Has anyone renewed/tried to renew it? The site says they will
auto-renew the subscription next time around using the card
details on file. So basically, it looks like you cannot turn-off the
auto renewal feature and will probably need to contact customer support
for this.

I work from home and I am online for around 8-10 hrs a day. I don't
really have any complaints from McAfee Security Center. It did seem
to slow down the system (with a 4GB RAM) but I can live with it.

Use the version which comes installed until it expires and shift to Avast Free or AVG free edition. That's what I did.

Avast & AVG do their job pretty well and I haven't faced any attacks till date. Avast's on access scan is very good and blocks almost all threats!

I was looking at the Kaspersky Antivirus (2010) price in their website and the 1 Year license costs Rs. 1169 whereas for 2 Years it is Rs. 2688. Aren't we supposed to get a discount when we buy for multiple years? Am I missing something here?

Here is the website: Kaspersky Lab eStore > Buy antivirus software online.

I use Avira anti virus free version, this works pretty well for me, it's very light on system resources, which is a real bonus, I had considered kaspersky etc, but found them too heavy on the system, i will be using Avira on my laptop when it's delivered next week. For firewall i use zone alarm and other stuff i use spybot and malware bytes, all free stuff and very effective, plus these softwares don't bog down your system resources.

Just my 2 paise.

Cheers,

Stefan

I know its cheaper outside (picked up the single PC one for Rs. 400). My question was, why does the 2 year license costs more than 2*(Price of 1 year license)?

I have been using avast home edition for the last 2-3 years. I found it very good, low on resources, good overall protection and above all free for lifetime.

At present, using Avira Free Edition for the last 2-3 months. It is also good but it lacks some features like email protection, etc. which was there in avast. Will soon shift to avast.

Overall, I found these free antivirus solutions at par with any other paid softwares. Also, another thing is these free versions are very light on resources than their paid conterparts which hogs a considerable resources on our computers (used Norton/McAfee).

Just my opinion.

+1 to that. Guys, I have been using this amazing antivirus for nothing less than about 6-7 years now. Haven't had a single infection till date. I do not even realise that it its running unless it catches something. Apart from the usual real-time scanning, it scans the web-traffic, IMs, Network Traffic and the P2P traffic in real time and would block malicious stuff right at the gate. Keeps getting updated on its own, sometimes more than twice a day!

And the best part - it is free.

Just to complement avast, yet another software which I came accross last year was Comodo Internet Security. Once again a free software which has a firewall, Anti-virus and Defense+ (basically a internal process monitor). Although it it takes a little time getting used to it. But once you are through it, rest assured absolutely notttthing leaves or happens in your computer without your permission.

With these two guards on my computer, I never have to bother about anything.
