Alright,

I have a problem. Recently, due to some problems I had to uninstall Kaspersky and before I installed it again, a friend of mine plugged in his pen drive. Now my PC is infected by a virus/worm called "Khatra.exe". I have tried various anti virus tools (downloaded nod32 yesterday and ran a scan) and none have been able to detect this as a virus! Anyone has had this problem and if possible, please post a solution? thank you.

Hellwrath

Download the kapersky virus removal tool. Download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 7.0.0.290 [20.04.2009] Free Trial - Another virus scanner and detection software from Kaspersky. - Softpedia and save it on desktop. Then boot in safe mode and double click on the virus removal tool. It will remove the viruses and then you can install kaspersky again.

Hellwrath, why dont you install Kaspersky once again, update the database of viruses and try a scan? Or did you already try this?

How exatly does this Khatra.exe affect the system?

Hemanth,
Whenever I try to boot in safe mode, my PC just hangs at a particular point. So I have been unsuccessful at that. I did install Kaspersky, but when I restarted the system, my theme got changed automatically to Windows classic and then gave an error which read "The procedure * cant find blah blah.dll" and it read "Application Error" at the bottom. So, I had to boot in linux and delete some files of Kaspersky, so it would let me boot windows and then un-installed Kaspersky.

Benny,

Its a funny virus. When I search for "Anti Virus" on Google, it detects that I am looking for one and shuts down my browser. And its a real pain in the a**. Somehow, I managed to kill these processes (Khatra.Exe, Xplorer.Exe etc.) and downloaded NOD32 as it was not letting me download that either. :(. Day before when I tried to end these processes, they would be restarted but only this time, I would have two of these Khatra.exe processes running.

All,

I have Mandriva installed, I did try running AVG anti-virus from linux but sigh, even it didnt detect it as a virus/worm.

Hellwarth I hope you have got a legitimate copy of kaspersky and not a pirated one. why dont you try taking out the hard drive and scan and remove virus using an other pc which has got a good antivirus. I am guessing this is your desktop.

Hemant,

Yes, thats the last option. But was just curious if anyone else here has come across this virus and what they have used to clean it.

I would go with what hemanth has said. However, before that you could try this link :

khatra.exe - Dangerous

They offer a free fully-functional 30 day trial pack.

Benny,

Me thinks those software links are just ads. Downloaded a similar software which "claimed" to remove the virus from a similar site and it didnt detect anything at all!

B&T, where can I find this at this rate? Anywhere on Lamington Road? The guy I usually pick up my hardware from, is quoting me 750 bucks for the same. He reasoned that the guys selling for 400 or so are pirated copies. Now since it seems to be working fine for you, I guess hem is just trying to make a little extra on the sale.

This is a small shop right next to the Police Station. Don't know the name. The disc comes in a small card box. And the activation code on a leaflet inside has to be scratched to unearth. I doubt pirates would go that far.

I know Amey from Pune buys it for Rs. 500/-, so 425/- (no bargaining) in Mumbai is believeable. And you are right, if it was pirated, I would have been notified, I am using it for a little over a month now.

One conclusion I make from this is that perhaps you need to look for someone else to buy your hardware from, also.

@ported_head, I think the 750/- wallah item is Kaspersky Internet Security (3 licenses), and the 450/- wallah item is Kaspersky Antivirus (3 licenses).

No it isn't. I got the KIS with 3 licences for 500 bucks in SP road Bangalore. He quoted 550, but when I said, everyone is selling at 500, he gave it me at that rate.
