Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

Folks

My Panasonic 42" Plasma PV8D that I had purchased in August 2008 has conked off, after 16.5 years! It was flawless all this long. It is not switching on, and the red light blinks 9 times in a cycle instead of becoming a constant red.

The Panasonic service guy with whom I have build a rapport (who's quit the company recently), said it indicates a motherboard problem, and that the company no longer makes those. He said that even if I get it fixed with a 3rd party, there is no guarantee on how long the TV will hold up.

I've been scouting for replacements and have seen QLED, QNED and OLED TVs from LG and Samsung. I might go for an LG 55" as it provides a 3 year warranty when companed to 1 year by Samsung.

I have a question on the HDMI ports---one of them is an ARC port, supposedly meant for sound bars. I don't have a sound bar, but have an Onkyo home theatre. Should I use only that port to connect to the Onkyo?

Currently with the Panasonic, I have connected the set top box to one of the 4 HDMI input ports in the Onkyo, and the output HDMI port of the Onkyo with the HDMI 1 port of the Panasonic. Can't I do the same setup with the new TV-- or should I use only the Arc HDMI port on the TV? Both LG and Samsung have 4 HDMI ports, one of which is an ARC port.

Thanks in advance.

Connect all your devices, such as your set-top box, DVD or Blu-ray player, PC, and Android boxes, to the AVR first. Then, connect the AVR to the TV using the eARC port. This is the recommended setup. If you plan to stream OTT content directly on your TV, this configuration will ensure that audio is passed through from the TV to the AVR seamlessly.

Thanks, matches my guess. But what additional support does the eArc HDMI port on the TV offer over the other HDMI ports? I'm asking because in the older Panasonic plasma, there are 2 HDMI input ports and neither is an eArc port. But it still works like a charm, with the sound playing from the Onkyo HT, and the picture on the TV.

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

eARC supports lossless, high-bandwidth, uncompressed audio transfer from your TV to your AVR. This is especially important when watching Dolby Atmos or DTS-supported movies on OTT platforms (which often require a premium subscription, except for Amazon Prime) or when playing such movie files from an external hard drive connected to your TV.

Nice to see another Panasonic plasma 42" user. I bought mine in Dec 2010 - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadge...ml#post2191610 (The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.)

I get continuous blinking yellow light rarely, which becomes alright when I switch off and switch on the TV. I am happy with the picture quality of the TV, one of the best investments we have made - total paisa vasool.

I get tempted to upgrade to a TV with bigger size, which gets shot down by wife. I feel bad to discard a TV which is otherwise performing well.

Keep us updated on the worthy replacement. All the best.

Same here. We have a P50V20 from 2012 and it's working flawlessly all these years. Only grouse would be power consumption, otherwise there is absolutely no reason to upgrade.

Thank you. So do you think I should connect the eArc HDMI input port on the TV to the HDMI out port on the Onkyo? This is how the current setup on the Panasonic is, though it has a normal hdmi input port, and not an eArc. I've connected by Jio set top box to one of the HDMI input ports on the AVR.

My Onkyo AVR does not have an eArc HDMI port though. It has 4 hdmi input ports (for DVD, Game, Streaming box and set top box) and a single hdmi output port.

If your AVR does not support eARC, very high-quality audio (lossless) cannot be transmitted from the TV to the AVR. Additionally, there may be limitations when playing movies with Dolby Atmos TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. While surround sound should still work to some extent, the overall audio quality will be compromised.

Thanks. But assuming the AVR supports eARC, what's the normal setup? Does one connect set top box directly to any non eARC HDMI input port on the TV, and the eArc port on the TV with the eARC port on the AVR? In which case the eARC port on the TV serves as an out port for sending audio to the AVR? Just curious though I can't use this setup.

I have no option but to continue the current connection setup with the Panasonic even with the new LG that I am planning to buy.

If overhauling your sound setup is not feasible, guess you will have to continue with the existing setup; in which case it will not be possible to fully enjoy lossless audio and Atmos etc. Depending on your use case and the content you watch, it may or may not be a deciding factor.

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

Newer technologies are making even slightly older TV's obsolete very quickly, while some of us have television sets from almost a decade and find no reason to change the TV set.(All thanks to Amazon Firestick).
From the threads above, people who are buying newer TV sets, if your older TV is still in working condition but not up to (your) mark (size / resolution / sound/features, etc..) or a fault that has crept up and the cost of repair / availability of service is not possible. What did you do to the older TV set?
exchange works only in some applicable conditions, giving it away to watchman / maid / housekeeper is also some times not possible as they already would be having a newer TV than what we are try to replace.
So, how do we dispose the older TV?

Good question. I was having the same. I luckily found a relative who is not well off who is willing to take my TV and get it repaired. I'd have been in a fix otherwise.

Unfortunately, none of the new gen TVs except the high end OLED/ QNED ones are able to come close to the picture quality of the Panasonic plasma. So I really feel bad parting with it.

Couldn't figure out the AV ports hence bought a Sounce converter (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0CL7TBPQC?...fed_asin_title) which is working flawlessly.

Thanks to all!

As regards connecting AVR to eARC hdmi port on the TV, I found an educative view on YouTube which is in the below url

This apart, I found out that my Onkyo AVR does have an hdmi out port labelled ARC. So at least I can enjoy better sound, though not as good as with an eARC port.
