Also, there should not be open window or exhaust fan nearby which may cause natural draft of air which works against the chimney.

Many kitchens I have seen, struggle with some of these aspects, resulting in poor performance and fumes spreading all over.
Not sure if these are even available yet in India, and I've seen them at precious few homes here in the UK, but you get some induction hobs where you have the extractor integrated into it, between the burners, or sometimes just behind the back edge/rear splashboard.

In my experience with these ones, they're fantastically effective considering they're right next to the source of the fumes/smoke/vapour. As such they manage to deal with most of it. Now you might ask what happens with the inevitable pot that boils over - I asked the same. It essentially has a pull out tray where you pop it out, with the filters able to be popped in the dishwasher and any gunk can be binned.

(Sidenote: I highly recommend fairly regularly popping the metal filters on top mounted hoods in the dishwasher if you want to keep them clean. Obviously if a big old layer of grime has built up you've no option but the overnight soak in hot, soapy water.)

Anyway, if I were to redo my kitchen, I'd seriously consider these flush mounted extractors. For refence the unit I used belongs to a Turkish friend and their cuisine is not that far removed from subcontinental cuisine in terms of being heavy on the good stuff.

An example of what these venting hobs or downdraft extractor equipped set ups look like

Little demo with a humidstat to show how well they handle vapours

Re: The Home Appliance thread

Does anyone here have experience with one-way cassette ACs?

Are they effective and is it better than the split ACs functionally or are they just for the aesthetics? Looking for 3 new ACs for my home and confused whether to go with split ACs or Cassette ACs.

Do you mean the IDU which is square/rectangular shape mounted on the ceiling?

If so, then that is just an IDU for central AC. Generally large capacity AC (4 to 10 tons or more) are VRF. A central ODU ( upto 10T and multiple units above that) Services multiple IDU's. The sum total of tonnage of IDU's are generally more than the capacity of ODU, as all the IDU's are not used at the same time. Central AC's are of commercial grade and are designed for long life and heavy duty. Normal split AC's are of domestic grade.

In case you have a requirement for large capacity cooling, a cassette type central AC is more efficient than individual AC's, and they last decades compared to individual units. The major downside is the capital cost - 2 to 3 times that of individual split AC's and the recurring maintenance costs.

Major suppliers of VRF central AC's are Daikin, LG, Blue Star etc. You can call them up for a proposal. That will give you an idea of the costs and the number of units etc.

Our LG 1 Ton Dual Inverter split unit got delivered today. In our area, there are lot of power outage and fluctuation(Yes, we live in Pune). Should I get a stabiliser installed for the AC?

Yes please. I'd highly recommend to use stabilizer. I also have LG dual inverter ACs (1.5T and 1 T) and using stabilizers for both from day one.

Re: The Home Appliance thread

Anyone looking for a no frills large capacity (9Kg )front load can look up this one below. I had bought this model for 29k in Jan 2024 and has been been performing as expected. This is no frills model without any kind of smart connectivity.

This is now going for less than 27k in the BBD sale which i think is a very good price for such a large capacity machine.

Book a service on Urban Company. I had my TV fixed through them earlier this year.

Re: The Home Appliance thread

Hi,
I am on the lookout for a larger 400+ litre refrigeraton. The french door bottom mount freezer ones from Samsung caught my fancy though I was initially not looking for one. However, I read some reviews that the bottom mount models seem to have issues with the compressor compared to the top mounted models.

Another thing I noticed was that only Haier seems to have a lot of bottom mount 2-door models. Samsung and LG seems to stay away from this. Is it again because of issues?

Looking to hear from folks who have the bottom mounted fridges for a few years on issues and the service feedback.

DONT buy a bottom mount freezer. The compressor and the cooling coil are forever singing in my fridge and there is a particular return pipe, that I've had replaced three times in the 5 years i've had the fridge. In addition at night when the world is silent my fridge makes horrible groaning noises, like its haunted, and its a "feature" because when i lost my mind and went back to the showroom, the showroom fridge was also haunted

Also in a bottom mount freezer, the usable space is pretty rubbish.

Re: The Home Appliance thread

I bought my mum a French door Samsung fridge freezer unit where the freezer is on the bottom. It's been 3 years now and there's been no issues at all. Personally I'm a big fan of having the freezer unit as a drawer that slides out considering you have heavier produce inside.

Most of the fridges I've had in the UK have also had bottom mounted freezers. We currently have a conventional two door Bosch with a bottom mounted freezer which again, can't say I've noticed any issues that stand out to me as being different to those fridge freezers that have the freezer compartment up top. The Bosch is noisy I'll admit, we'll often hear it humming along. Oddly enough the Samsung is much quieter even though it's a big old unit.

All that being said I think it's best to stick with a conventional fridge in India. The staff much prefer it, in fact we ended up needing to get a similarly sized (to the Samsung) conventional 2 door unit with the freezer up top for the service kitchen. They rarely touch the pull out freezer on the French door model.

While I have no personal experience, one of my aunts has a Panasonic unit in Kolkata for years, and is quite happy with it. Never needed service so far.

Nothing like that. We had panasonic for 10 years, not a single issue. Changed it only since we needed more volume

This is not the one that is generally used in offices and showrooms, rather a much sleeker unit that is used for home and is mounted on the ceiling. Here is a link.
