Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Hi,

I was comparing the Canon S95 and Canon SX 210 IS. what I noticed that SX 210 IS is more impressive and adavanced in terms of Zoom and Mega pixels. But when came to price tag, it looks like that S95 is quoting an extra 100$

Why such big difference when SX 210 is more advanced than S95?

I completely get you point but when it comes to cameras i have absolutely "NO IDEA" and i posted my requirements earlier to "GET IDEA".

Please help me out, till now i have shortlisted the FZ from panasonic.

Its tough to get the best. But easier to get a good one

Anyway, I am not suggesting any particular model. But you can visit the store, and take couple of pictures of two or 3 models in a reasonable lights. Compare them, and you know which one is better.

Personally, I like canon much than other brands. But off-late hear that Nikon is equally good too.

Good luck.

If you think you are going to be more inclined towards landscape, people and street pictures and low light photography, between the Panasonic LX series, Canon S and G series and the Oly XZ1 would be the automatic choice. However, these do not have the zoom reach for wildlife. The lens optics of these cameras and the sensor (except for Oly) are superior.

If wildlife photography is also a priority, then the Panasonic TZ or FZ series, or the Canon equivalents would be a better choice. Here you will compromise on the low light shooting capability and the high ISO capability but you will get a longer zoom reach. Comparison between the TZ and the FZ type would be a reasonably compact size and 16x zoom (TZ type) .vs. bulky size and 30x plus zoom (FZ type).

@salikt
More megapixels and longer zoom does not necessarily mean better specs. The S 95's sensor is bigger (meaning better high ISO/low noise capability) and the optics better and faster (meaning better low light capability) than the SX210 IS. Both of these points make the IQ from the S 95 better than the SX210, hence the price difference.

Would you consider the SX210 IS more advanced than a dSLR with lesser megapixels and a shorter zoom range??

I've used the G11, S90 and the LX5. Seen the results of XZ1 (straight out of camera).

LX5 is a very balanced camera and is the best bang for buck. It has the best video capability amongst the above mentioned, better battery life and a reasonably fast and decent leica lens.

I might still go for the XZ1 though .

You want an almost new LX5, I would be ok to part with it and go for the xz1!

Look more closely at the specs.

1. S95 has a much larger sensor
2. The S95 lens (though lower zoom) has a much wider aperture f/2.0 vs f/3.1 in the SX210 (shoots better pictures in low light)
3. Shoots RAW

The best camera is the one that can be with you at all times. If the XZ1/LX5 works for you, then great; both are excellent cameras. For me the S90/95 is something that I feel comfortable carrying most of the time.

Absolutely! One would carry the S90/95 much more than the lx5/xz1/g11/12 (wish I had that one too ).
If size does matter one would opt for the s95 else lx5 or the xz1. G12 is a great camera too.

If size really does not matter one should seriously consider the m 4/3rds like epl2 or the gf2 with a couple of lenses like the 20mm 1.7 panny and probably add an all purpose zoom eventually (maybe do it the other way too).

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Hi Guys,

I was basically looking at a camera in the 200-300$ range. Have been using a basic Canon A480 till now
My requirements are
1. good zoom range (at least 10x. Was looking at the G12, but cost+zoom negated it)
2. manual controls
3. good battery life (since i wander around in places with no access)

Amazon is selling FZ35 at 249$. Whereas FZ40 is listed for 399$. (Golu in Chandni Chowk quotes 19.5k INR)

My question is :
Does it still make sense to get the FZ 35. (I may be able to pump up the budget to 400$ in case FZ40 offers something significantly better)
What are the prices for this camera in Dubai?
Any other models I should be looking at?

Thanks
Taps

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Comparing the S95 and LX5, I found the following in favour of LX5.

1) Wide angle of 24 mm as opposed to 28 mm in S95.
2) Zoom works during video recording; does not work on S95.
3) Aperture at tele end in LX5 is f/3.3 while its f/4.9 in S95.
4) Sensor size slightly bigger (1/1.63" vs 1/1.67" in S95)
5) Max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec vs 1/1600 sec in S95.
6) Hot shoe provision.
7) External view finder add-on provision (expensive option).

6&7 above may not make sense in a P&S camera making them bulkier and defeating the purpose of having a compact camera.

The points in favour of S95:

1) Compact and lighter.
2) Slightly cheaper.
3) No separate lens cap as in LX5.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Purchased a Fujifilm S2500 HD from Croma for Rs.10000 yesterday.
It came with a Fuji pouch, rechargeable battery pack, 2GB SD card.
I am quite happy with what it offers for the price.
