Re: Designing a new website

I was proceeding with domain registration with google itself then I know that google domain app. is supported by godaddy only.
So I got my domain registered directly from godaddy (Got an email id + a web page).
Now I have got this free email app from google.
BUT a weird issue is there, from the email id (made on gmail for my domain) I can send mail and do all other stuff BUT whenever I am sending a mail from another Id to the new business Id it is failing to get delivered.
I have got all registration verification procedure done.
What could be the problem now!?!

Re: Designing a new website

Thanks Kippu.
I have replied.
For everybody, it was required to change the MX settings (in DNS settings) and add google mail server at destination with highest priority given. It resolved the matter.
Thanks everybody to lend help.

Re: Designing a new website

Google stopped giving free mail service for custom/business domains, hardly 2 weeks later I registered one.
Seems I was lucky to get it just in time.
I believe free web service "era" is coming to end sooner or later.

Website Development Suggestions

I would like some suggestions on the best tool to create a website. The purpose is to host the PDF documents of the books, articles and critiques written by my grandfather and great-grandfather. All of them are out of copyright now. The books have been slowly disintegrating in a room in our family house in Nellore. A year ago, we embarked on a rather ambitious task of scanning those books - page by page and storing them on a cloud storage drive.

Now we have the soft copies (PDFs) of most of the books. (Some of them were too damaged to scan, unfortunately)

I want to create a website and offer these books for download to anyone who is interested in reading them. They are a treasure trove of knowledge. Some of the titles are "Notes on the Preliminary Chapters of Mahabharata", "Post-mortem life in Ancient Egyptian Belief", "Year Measurements in Ancient Times". Some of them may be outdated or not relevant anymore but I do believe there is a lot to take away from these writings.

By profession, I am a cloud solution architect but my expertise is not in the area of creating websites. I want to set up a simple user interface; a search box for at least the titles and a way of just downloading the content. That is pretty much what I have in mind for these books.

What is the best solution for this? I can sign up for a WordPress site for instance but is there an "out of the box" solution/theme available for this? (I couldn't find one). Is there a better tool/method available?

I am open to engaging a small firm to write custom code as well.

In case there is already an existing service for books like this where we can just upload the PDFs and the metadata, I would love to hear about it.

I hope this non-automobile thread is OK on this forum.

Thank you
Venu

Re: Website Development Suggestions

I am no expert in web development, but I do have my own website for a few years now which I created on word press platform. It took some time and learning but not that hard.

WordPress or similar platforms offer plenty of options for these sorts of common needs. I just spent a few minutes googling about eBooks on word press, looks like there are many plug-ins which could be potential options for you.
Some examples

While I have not used it myself, I keep hearing about https://www.squarespace.com/ on the podcasts I listen to. You can check it out and PM me if you want any discount coupon.

Hey Venu

For your usecase, I strongly recommend going in for a WordPress website. All you need to do is, either load the WooCommerce plugin (native e-commerce plugin for WordPress) with digital downloads as the product type and set the price to free so anyone can download or use an Ebook plugin for WordPress.

Only thing to keep in mind is that WordPress is open source so keeping it secured and updated comes with the territory.

I’m a partner at a technology company and while we’re specialised in custom, scalable solutions, we use WordPress all the time for quick turnaround solutions for everyone from SMEs to some very large names in Finance.

All the best, happy to answer any queries you may have.

Re: Website Development Suggestions

WordPress is the best option for beginners, it takes a couple of days to get used to the features.

Re: Website Development Suggestions

Use Squarespace if you want to minimize efforts.

Use WordPress hosted on a VPS (recommendation: DigitalOcean) if you need scalability and customization. Use nginx/php-fpm/redis/mariadb stack. Use cloudflare for DNS. Protip: Use a photography theme from WordPress store to maximize graphics (like book cover photos), which is ideal for such a website. Ping me if you need any more help/how-to.

There are many plugins which match your requirements (commerce plugins). I expect that ebooks won't take up a lot of space, just in case you have many of them, use a CDN. Approximately, all of this should cost you $15-20 per month (including hosting, CDN and domain and excluding licenses, if any). Expect the cost to rise up to $100-150 per month if you involve any small firms. I suggest that you do it yourself. I work for a software company right now and these guys are in the business just for the profits.

I think then you can host it on AWS S3 - it can host static content beautifully. Or even utilize Lightsail. All you domain registration/DNS needs would be fullfilled under one roof. You can compare the costs of such a solution with Azure as well and pick whoever provides the best value.

WordPress Freelancers

Hello Forum,

Do you have any good recommendations for a WordPress website builder expert who can help setup a website where the content needs to be restored from a previously existed website? It could be a bit tricky as you can imagine.

Content is text and photos [travelogues / experiences ].

I have contacted a few, but failed get any trusted parties so far. Any help based on personal experience is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dileep.
