You can buy 3G phones for less than Rs.15,000 today whose features are comparable to other phones in that price range. 3G alone does not raise the price of a handset (much). It is similar to the difference between a tri-band phone and dual band phone. Negligible price difference if I'm not mistaken. 3G is simply another way for the phone to connect to its service provider. The next step if you will, as I believe we are all running on 2 or 2.5G now. GPRS and EDGE are different things altogether. They are more value added services, hence the price tag. And, at the rate things are moving, it's only a matter of time before this enters India.

Either ways, the point here being that is you have 2 phones with identical features and prices, but one was 3G ready, which would you chose? That was my point.

@ steeroid yea i know about the jam but if u know i had a xda 2 months back which i got from uk for 24000 and later sold it for 28000 i just could not carry it around so needed a small phone. i like the jam not too sure if i will get it since the camera sucks on it. so i settled in for a 7610, k700i. selling the 700i now in some days lets see then.

@ rtech i know u dont like nokia hehe. whats the phone u use right now i kinda like that too. but the problem with siemens i have issues with is the resale. i have a siemens a 60 right now i got it in jan for 5500 then went to sell it 3 weeks back and was offered only rs. 1000 for it i was like ghrrr. so i stick with nokia or SE. i love samsung and moto too but just drool after it mostly not buy it.

Well I use a JAM and I can confirm that the Camera sucks in the original version even though it was allegedly 1.3 megapixels. They subsequently released a camera patch - not sure how good that is because I dont use the camera on the phone in any case.

JAM is quite cool to carry around - feels just alike a mobile, not like a pDA. I had an xda 2 as well, and the difference is phenomenal.

There's also another windows based pocket pc called the Everex. The smaller version of the same is lighter than the JAM but I wouldnt know about resale.

I have the JAM. Its the same device thats also known as the Qtek S100, XDA Mini, iMate JAM, MDA Compact, Dopod Mini (Chinese).

All of them are manufactured by HTC in Taiwan. The only difference is in the branding (the name printed on the outside). Different brands also come with slightly different customizations.

O2 sucks for support, so I wouldnt recommend the XDA. The iMate is best as far as support is concerned. However, regardless of the name of your device you can get all the support you want at www.xda-developers.com

i know all that but the firmware is diffrent as well not just the branding. o2 support havent ever used because when i bought it o2 was not even alive in india at all. so it was a risk.

hmmmm the hardware is the same, the OS is the same. The only difference is in the 'Extended ROM' which includes the customizations. Typically these customizations relate to language (arabic, italian, french, german et al), operator settings (eg., XDA comes with built in operator settings for O2, imate has different versions with operator settings either for the middle east or europe) and some 'free' software that can be downloaded from the net in any case.

So there isnt any real difference, and its quite possible to replace the xda's extrom (customizations) with that of an iMate and vice versa. For eg., my iMate is currently running a Qtek Extrom. imho no other platform has so many indepedent developers producing such a large variety of applications. I bought the 9300 recently and it is such a big let down compared to the iMate platform. There's also an iMate 4 coming up soon with 2 cameras, wi-fi, push to talk, 3G support and most other things you can think of including a ingenius screen.

Watch out for the new Samsung coming out with a similar profile... they're hitting back at Motorola since they say they've been making 8mm thick phones for a few years now and so the hype over the 'Razr Moto' is not warranted.

However, please note: I've never used a Samsung for any length of time.

I use a very basic sony ericsson Z200.
Absolute junk. No features, Primitive phonebook, Terrible reception, Battery that drains after 1 call. I dont even know why i am still using it. Oh yes.. i cant afford a new phone

I absolutely lust after the motorazr. Didnt like it the first time i saw it, but when i used it just fell in love with it. Doesnt hurt that the ad has a really cute chick in it too. But its way too expensive. Also no features for that price tag. The motorola 1150 or something is coming out soon enough though which is like the razr but with a megapixel cam, memory card support and stuff like that. So am gonna wait for sometime.
