Since it is a gift to my wife, it is mostly with her only as of now. I quite liked it for the features it is offering to me. However, having used Windows XP for over 10 years now, finding a little difficult to use Windows 7!

I would certainly write a detailed report on the product for any future users.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I have a couple of questions about my laptop that I hope someone will be able to help me with:
- My laptop has Windows 7 in French and as it is the Home edition I am unable to change the langauge. Is it possible to get the language packs installed and change the language to English?
- It has an AZERTY keyboard. Is it possible to change the setup to a QWERTY by moving the keys around? Is this recommended? The problem will be that my workplace in India will have QWERTY keyboards and I dont want a mismatch between keyboards as it affects typing speed and causes a lot of typos.
Thanks for your inputs!

Google

The keys should be reassigned to QWERTY format by default.

yes, but then the keys will have to be physically moved too?
Also, language packs are available only for the Ultimate edition? I have the Home edition; looks like I will have to purchase the English version of Windows

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

This one has older CPU (Core 2 Duo), you can look at T540903IN8 (Inspiron 15 R). It costs approx 29k + taxes. Advantages:

1. Win 7 64 bit included in cost
2. Core i3 CPU
3. Better on board graphics

Thinkpads are the best when it comes to typing ergonomics but might turn out to be expensive. Toshiba, HP and DELL have some nice options and their keys have a tactile and longlasting feel too. For good sound quality all three will do well by laptop speaker standards. I will suggest you also look at Asus which are extremely well built. HP loses on customer service though while Toshiba and Dell are better followed by Asus.

Stay away from Acer/Gateway/emachines products.

PS: WHile a chipset graphics solution might work for you, I will suggest you go with a dedicated entry level GPU to enjoy the WIndows 7 environment.

The keys are not to be moved if you can do without looking at them. Also, usually english Language pack is pre-installed by default if I am not mistaken.

If nothing works, Reinstall windows and then you can select US (great britain) while installing.

DELL N5010, it has 4 GB RAM that will be used by 64 bit OS that comes by default. It also has better graphics card + 3 years warranty.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

What card has the asus and Dell got? It's less about the Graphics memory and more about the card itself. An entry level 1.5gb wont hold a candle to a mid-level 512mb card.

Asus is cheaper and lighter and you wont feel the need for that extra gig if you are only using it for office, music, movies and internet.

But Dell is fully loaded for most of your needs.

Not sure why you are against Acer and Gateway, but I have Acer laptop from past 6 yrs and it is working absolutely fine as it was on day 1. And this Acer Laptop remains continuous on for months. And I have also used Gateway machines for more than 3 yrs at work and they were fine too.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I am planning to buy a laptop. The specs need to be i5 with 4 GB of RAM and a dedicated Graphic card with the screen size of 15.6.
There are many vendors which sell laptops with the configuration but I am not sure with which vendor to go for.
Budget is max 50K
Can you guys recommend a model and vendor?

I use a Lenovo Ideapad Y-560. This is arguably the best notebook available for 50k. The only thing I wish it had, was a full-HD display.

You could check out Dell XPS 15. Meets all your requirements but costs 55k on Dell website. But has i7, and 2GB 435M graphics, good for laptops at this price in India.

Here's what you need to do. Call them up, inquire about the prices, act like you're a serious buyer, but not desperate or excited, then tell them that you'll think over it as it's exceeding your budget.

It's generally accepted that unless you were born in an unlucky hour, you'll get a call from them later with a discounted price.
