This would enable me to refine my search for a good laptop before I finally purchase it.
In midrange cards the 5650 and its overclocked version 5730 are the most popular.
As you go high end, the entry level high end card is 5850.
Then you have the high end 5870 from ATI.

In Nvidia space, 350M and 250M are the mid range cards, but they are rare.
However in high end a VFM card from Nvidia is the GTX 460M which can be found in 1100$ laptops, and the 360M found in some 900$-1000$ laptops.

In India, the best cards I have found in HP/Lenovo/Acer etc., are the 5560 and 5730 with laptops with the mentioned cards costing from 40,000-60000 depending upon brand and other specs.

Do you know of lappies other than Asus G53/73, MSI G-seris, Alienware, Sager (Clevo) that come with the 460M ? A few days back, I couldn't even find Toshiba Qosmios with a 460M. The cheap one had, IIRC , a GTS 360M.

I recently bought the Qosmio Q892 for 1030$
However, now its not available, however the Q893(same spec with backlit keyboard) is selling from amazon for 1199$

But keep watching the price space, prices fluctuate rapidly

On a related note, I have started playing crysis on high settings in native 1650x945 resolution, and it runs fine without any stuttering. I wonder how do I find out what FPS I am getting?

Windows 7 Home Basic do come in x64 bit, it's only Starter edition which comes only in x32 bit. Rest all of Windows 7 versions are available in both x32 and x64 bit.

You are correct (more to the point, I was wrong). Home Basic does come in 64 bit. I missed it and always thought it was only in x86. The technet site does not list home basic x64 for download. All other versions (N, regular, x86, x64, starter to enterprise/ultimate) are there.

Or you could use a utility called FRAPS. Works for all games, and also allows you to take screenshots/make videos of the games you're playing.

Download Fraps 3.3.0 free version

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I want to buy a laptop for home usage, heavily confused between so many options. my preferences are:
- 14" or more scree size
- Good graphics and video quality, more for occasional Skype video chats and youtube videos
- 4GB or more of RAM
- Few games like NFS should run on it
- Should not generate much of underbody heat

Please suggest, also any inputs on the AMD Phenom triple core processors would be great, Dell has one machine with AMD config.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

If you want to run the latest NFS, atleast a 5730 card is required for medium settings. A 5650 will also do for medium settings.
Cheapest 14" with the 5650 should cost you around 40,000 in India, from ACER.

In 15" you will get a VAIO for 45000 with core i5 and 5650 graphics card.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

MSI GX640 (THe GPU is a GDDR5) I was about to buy it recently.
Alienware from Dell if Budget permits
Asus G53JW again if budget permits (the lambo series is based on this one)

also I think WIpro or HCL (dont remember) has a mid-range solution

IIRC, it was around 70K. But I think it comes on order.
