Yes, I am thinking on the same lines. It seems there's a Dell store at Thane. So might go there over the weekend.

Kahani mein Twist! It seems 1018 is discontinued and there is a new Netbook (M101Z) which retails at 21,800 at Dell stores. This changes the whole story as my budget is max 17K (or upto 20).

Considering Lenovo as my 2nd option.

Don't get it. It's available on Dell site. You could buy directly from them, online. You can even bargain.

Inspiron Mini 10 (1018) Netbook | Dell India

EDIT : Whoops, sorry. It's available through resellers only, not online. My bad. Maybe the site hasn't been updated.

I think I saw it at Vijay Sales. but didn't want to take a chance by buying a product from a "Mobile maker". So the war is now between HCL, HP & Lenovo. Need to visit the stores again.

Btw, split keys are better or the "whole keyboard" set? I would prefer the wholesome one but in case the one of the key's stop working, the whole set has to be replaced.

Asus practically created the Netbook market. Calling them a 'mobile maker' is silly.

I forgot the term but it's companies like Asus, Sager etc. that manufacture the chassis (laptop body) for big shots like Dell. All other stuff (LCD, processor etc) is sourced from respective manufacturers anyway. It's just brand perception.

Not exactly relevant here, but Asus happens to be by far the largest manufacturer of motherboards, producing twice the number as the second largest manufacturer, i.e. Gigabyte. Due to this, Asus has maximum interaction with the gaming community (The gaming community demands a lot of features on their boards, for ease of overclocking etc). And the result is Asus G53/G73 gaming laptops. You don't get performance like this for 70k even in branded desktops.

Wow! That is some knowledge. Can't help it though as I never saw any ASUS Netbooks ever.

True. A very important thing in today's world. How is the Service Back up in Mumbai?

No Problem. I think I would stick to the normal model only. Serves the purpose well and looks good too.

Pretty bad...

Simple part replacement (TFt Panel) took 5 weeks under warranty.

Asus has Lamborghini and Acer has Ferrari for Brand image. I use the Lamborghini and it truly is an advanced product (with a mediocre cpu though.)

I am doubtful of the Acer's quality though.

I recently called Lenovo asking about a hinge replacement (not under warranty). They said it may take upto 5 weeks.

In terms of A.S.S., Dell's service has been most consistent in my experience.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I would stay away from Lenovo any day. Maybe their products are feature rich, but after sales service is a pain. My sis has a lenovo, and apart from being costly, spares take ages to arrive at the service center. We bought an extended warranty pack (2 years back), which took a whole 3 months to get activated, the funniest part is, the 12 month period would start from the date the pack was purchased, and not from the day it got activated. Thank God she doesn't have any issues with her lappy now and that she's finally decided to trash it once she completes her course in a couple of months time

So all in all, besides Dell, all have some or the other issue. So does that mean I should look at HP again? or HCL?

Hi there,
I have been using Dell mini 10 since last 8 months. Its good.
But mine's US make. A dealer imported a lot by forming cartel and retailed it locally.
Mine has 1 GB RAM, which at times is insufficient.
So if you can get the one with 2 GB RAM, it would be better.
A Sir of mine has one with 2 GB RAM, it costs some where around 20 or 21K.
