Everything looks good except for the 5400 rpm drive. Get a ssd or atleast a 7200 rpm drive to really enjoy the i7 and 8gb goodness.

My preference for a good durable laptop is thinkpad or dell precision or Latitude or even vostro than any of the cheaper home grade laptops.
The laptop dealer told me the same thing. But it may be worth noting that the business model may have poorer multimedia abilities - like speakers may not be lound enough, etc. So remember to check out these things before buying.

My friend further said that he is very surprised to find recent Intel chipsets failing just after a year! Its almost as if they have some self destruct mechanism built in. Its obvious that companies don't want you to use products too long. According to him AMD seems like a better bet in terms of durability, as of now.

According to him, Toshiba and Acer quality currently is around the bottom. Likewise for Lenovo.

This is true for lappies sold in India and other 3rd world countries. The same brands sold in advanced countries may have better quality.

Warranty is your best hedge against these dirty tactics. One year warranty is a joke. LIke I said, try to get ones with 3 year warranty (at no extra cost!). No use if you are paying so much extra for that warranty... then you are almost back to square one.

Anurag where did you buy this from? The dell india site has not listed a 1080P version in the 15R turbo.

Need to buy a high performance Dell with a 1080P screen and a screen size less than or equal to 15 inches. Thanks!

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Dell has really dumbed down their laptops. In 2011, one could for certain laptops customise/upgrade to a 7200 rpm hard disk and a FHD 1920*1080 screen. That customisation does not seem to be available for most of their range now. As to others, I see very options now and earlier to get these two upgrades.

To rephrase....Dell India has dumbed down. They don't offer the same level of customisation as in the early days of Dell in India.
Dell in the US(and all other companies) offer vast customisation options. earlier they used to import your order from Singapore, now I guess they have just stocked a few model and are keen on selling them.

It is a special edition laptop. I tried contacting the sales at Dell. Spoke with their customer care and got the laptop. Number that is given in the Contact Us in their Dell, India website.

What you say is right that this model with such configuration is not available outside. Searched a lot of stores (Reliance digital etc)

Cheers,
Anurag.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

BHPians,

We are soon planning to buy a Laptop for home use. Please thrown in some suggestions for a lappy around 40-45k range.
Preferences:
1) Screen size; 15.6 (Can settle for 14" if other specs are great)
2) 4 GB RAM (Minimum)
3) 1 GB graphics memory (at least)

Rest of the factors can be adjusted to, such as brand, special keys, ports, etc.

HP Pavilion G6-2005AX has same specs and it cost me 31.5K from hs18. Since your budget is more, you can go for higher spec system.

You can get a Core i5 equipped machine at this price with a Discrete Graphics Card.
BTW, Memory of the Graphics card isn't really the main parameter for performance. It depends more on the shaders and cores(you can check them in the reviews). Most applications don't use more than 500 MB Graphics Card.

Pardon me mate, but we are getting a nearly same specced Dell Inspiron Ultrabook 14Z, Core i5 2.5GHz (instead of i7), 8 GB RAM (instead of 6), 1TB HDD for just 43K on Ebay India - http://www.ebay.in/itm/181090069900?...84.m1423.l2649 - It's a brand new sealed US spec Ultrabook where I have seen build quality is a notch higher than the Indian models with 1 year International Warranty. This one also has a DVD drive and USB 3 ports. Specs here - http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-14z-5423/pd

Just for the information of people looking for similar Ultrabooks. Tremendous value for money for the specs.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi Gurus,

I am looking to buy a goo set of speakers for my laptop. The two purposes I have are - using them for my training sessions for a crowd of about 25 max in quiet rooms to play audio and video, the other purpose being, using them to listen to some music on my desk. I am wanting to buy speakers that give very good quality sound. I am a novice so I dont know how to define "good quality". What I am looking for is no jarring at high volume, clear reproduction of all frequencies. My budget is close to 5000 rupees.

Kindly guide. I live in Goregaon (E), Mumbai.

Regards,
Dushyant

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Is buying a laptop from Dell's website (www.dell.co.in) recommended ? I found their rates lower than flipkart or even offline stores.
Ofcourse, the offline store rates I compared were without bargaining. I am not very good at that.. :(
