May I know your Acer model pls.
Well UK opens up more possiablities, the model is Acer Timeline X 4820T-372G50Mnks. This you should be able to pick up for around $500 mark. I used it at home yesterday again and I love it for what i wanted it for. Reviews on suspect build quality i think is to be taken with a pinch of salt at the price point.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Greetings to all the Laptop Gurus…

I have a Laptop with me , which is not in use at all. And I’m planning to sell it off and use the cash for other gadget.

The Laptop is the Acer Ferrari 1000, which utilizes the AMD Turion 64 X2 and comes stuffed with 1GB of RAM, 120GB SATA hard drive, 1.3 megapixel webcam, external DVD+/-RW optical drive, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics chipset, 1,280 x 800 WXGA screen, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi. And all the fanfare products which came in the box

Comes with a very Snazzy box and a lot of accessories, with all the products having the official Ferrari Badge.

The big question.. what price should I be expecting for this.

Tough to put a value against this laptop.

On one hand, its configuration is outdated; on the other it has drool-worthy looks + accessories. I guess reasonable cost would be around 12 - 15k.

How old is the laptop? What is the screen size? Is it around 12 inches? The specifications are on the lower side. I would say 13-15k.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hello friends,

Finally got updated from

Dell inspiron 5160 with Pentium 4 and 512 mb sd ram to Sony vaio f series with i7 740qm, 6gb ram and 1 gb gt425m graphics card (it comes with backlit keyboard and i love it). forgot to mention 320 gb hdd @ 7200 rpm

One word about the new laptop. Its really amazing. yesterday i was browsing net while i was copying files to my segate portable hard disc while running disc defragmenting. I was happy that the system has not slowed even a single bit unless i found that virus scan was also running parallely. Now that defines the performance. In my dell (bought in Jan 2005) any one of the above task and the second task will not work.

Not to blame dell. It served me 5 years with only once i had to visit the service (middle of 4th year for issues in heat sink).

Now i have a small issue. th laptop came without partitioning. I used disc mgmt to do partitioning. The drive was split into 159 gb for OS as primary. The remaining i made into three drives. i could not shring the c drive any further. I do not want to install anything on c drive. So i want to give it a free space of 50 gb. Remaining 100 gb i want to use for other files. No can somebody please help me out how to partition the drive c without damaging the OS?

Looking at th unused condition, you will only incur loss on this transaction. Better give it to a family member for using.

If you really want to get rid of it, sell it to a close friend relative at their price. You can expect in the range of 12K for this unit.

I would say 32-33K should get you a decent laptop. To get a No-OS laptop, you need to approach a dealer. Asus, MSI, Acer and other Taiwanese brands have 1-2 no-os models and you might get them below 30K.

the first thing to check for will be keyboard flex and build quality. Even asus are not like what they used to be.

Download GParted. Burn it into a CD, and boot from the CD. It's a fairly simple process which you can do on your own. I would suggest reading the documentation first, before you boot from the CD, so that you know what to expect and what to do.

GParted is a very reliable disk partitioning utility.

Apart from gparted, can also use Partition Wizard Boot CD from here (freeware):

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to boot computer directly to manage partition.

Also has a bootable flash drive.
Excellent program. Burn the download to CD, change your bios to boot from cd, boot from the burnt cd. Even if you do nothing then, after 1-2 mins, it will get to the program screen. Just shrink the C: drive by as much you want by shifting the partition to the left. Can then use the free space to make a new partition, merge, etc. Very versatile and my program of choice (gparted is also excellent but I am used to partition wizard).

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

After months of debating and deciding and then undeciding I finally went in for a Dell Studio 17 1745.

The following Specs -

Win 7 Home Premium
17.3'' Screen HD Wide
Core 2 Duo 2 x 2.2 ghz 3 mb cache
3 GB DDR3, 320 GB 5400 RPM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512 MB Graphics
Slot loading DVD R
2 MP Cam
JBL 2.1 speakers
Backlit Keyboard
6 Cell - 4 to 5 hours Battery
HDMI

These specs are a bit outdated BUT the price is killer - I am getting this from the UK at less than 28k !!

What say guys ?

I am just crossing my fingers as I have asked my colleague to order it today and there are limited stocks so I am hoping I will get mine.

Will get this in 1 month.
