If you are looking at Acer - then also look at Gateway.
Acer purchased Gateway sometime back so Gateway stuff is made by Acer - they share a lot of the parts. The A. S. S is done by the same team.

And you get better deals on Gateway.

Yes.

I visited Croma today & enquired about Dell. They had a different counter for Dell. They lady there informed be they would charge Rs. 1700 extra for Windows 7 Premium & Rs. 1500 extra for 500 GB instead of 320 GB. Basic price of 15R is some 35k.

It still survived her abuse (for some unknown reason, every electronic gadget that she buys will go kaput in no time - mobile phone, camera, pen drive). It's alive and kicking even now, albeit a banged up DVD drive, which can easily be replaced.
Somehow, even I am interested in Lenovo over Acer.

Dell - the leader, IMO. They charge you a premium but it's worth it. Their service is unmatched.
I never considered Dell. But now everyone seems to recommend Dell.

I will just research more about Acer now.

Sony VAIO - Er... I have my doubts on their build quality. Quite a few of my friends who bought a VAIO got their display adapters/screen/motherboard replaced (any or all of these items) within a couple of months of use.

Samsung - Don't have any info. I didn't like their build quality or the pricing when I saw their laptops for a demo recently. My personal opinion, maybe you should see for yourself.
Samsung & Sony is out of my list now. Its between Dell, Acer & Lenovo.

Raj,

Why haven't you considered HP or Toshiba laptops?

The bad part of Dell is that you have to buy everything else from them, they just give you a basic laptop. Also when I had a enquired they said the delivery would take min 15 days since they build the laptop after you order. The total cost for 15R was coming to 45K which is damn expensive when compared to the laptops available sub 35K price.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hmm, my brother uses HP & I somehow dint like it. Also, for some reason, I dont want a Toshiba.

Now I have shortlisted Acer & Dell. According to their respective websites, Dell 15R is costing me 40k with 1GB graphics card & windows premium as additional (3GB Ram & 320 GB HDD). a similar config Acer (aspire 5742G) will cost me 35k.

Advantage of Acer apart from the pricing is the processor is Intel Core i5 whereas Dell has i3, will that matter much? Also, it has 500 GB compared to 320 GB in Dell.

For the same money (40k), I can also buy a Dell 14R with 4GB RAM & 500GB HDD !!!

I dont mind waiting for 15 days but i want a good, reliable & sturdy laptop.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Sony now has this excellent configuration for buyers with moderate budget

Flipkart.com: Sony VAIO E Series VPCEH15EN: Computer

A close associate of mine bought this model yesterday. The build quality is somewhat inferior compared to an earlier Vaio but the configuration is good enough - Core i3 (2nd gen), Wi-fi, Bluetooth, HDMI, 4 USB ports with Windows 7 Home Basic 64 bit, MS Office 2010 Starter Edition (Word and Excel with advt) preloaded.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Guys, how safe is it to buy the laptop online? I guess I am getting a good deal on Flipkart.com & they also have cash on delivery option.

Flipkart.com: Dell Inspiron 15R Ci3/ 4GB/ 500GB/win7: Computer

Dell 15R-
Intel Core i3, 500 GB HDD, 4 GB DDR3 RAM for Rs. 37950/-

The only thing this does not have is a dedicated graphic card but i guess i can live without that.

On DELL's website, the price quoted for the same is Rs. 41,000/-

Else, I can opt for ACER-

Acer 5750-
Intel 2nd gen Core i5, 500 GB HDD, 3 GB DDR3 RAM for Rs. 34710/-

Also, Acer 5750G-
Intel 2nd Gen Core i3, 500 GB HDD, 3 GB DDR3 RAM & 1GB graphics card for 35730/-

Well, I had bought a Sony laptop for my wife around 3 months back. Model number is VPCEB44EN.

Since yesterday the laptop is not even booting. Getting disk error.
Need to take it to service center now.

sorry bro, my bro uses Compaq & not HP, so I dislike Compaq & not HP.

Meanwhile bumped into the HP Pavilion dv6. Costs like around 37-38k. Has 3GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HDD & Intel i3 (i5 costs much more!). I really liked this a lot but silversteed has mentioned that HP has reliability issues, so I am a bit skeptical. I was about to finalize this today but when I saw the HP, i decided to take some more time.

So, now tussle is between:
1) HP Pavilion dv6
2) Acer 5750
3) Acer 5742G
4) Dell 15R

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I have been using a Toshiba Satellite series laptop for over 5yrs now. No problems at all.

However I would stay away from Dell these days. The current run of Dell's which come from China are pretty poor in quality. At work I see that on an average due to some reason or the other these Dells crash min once a year.

My work latitude series underwent 2 Hard disk replacements in 3 yrs. You walk into the IT desk at work and u see daily min 3-4 laptops are there due to various motherboard/HDD failures. Now all of these Dells are < 3yrs old yet not sure why so many problems.

DV6 was on sale at eBay for 25k a few days back. Do check with the seller if he has any stocks remaining.

HP DV6 - 3121NR CORE I3 LAPTOP - Deal OF the Week Offer | eBay

If not, then check out the Toshiba range on Flipkart. Really VFM. Even the link Wildon has shared is good, I guess I am going to pick that up in a month. Go for 2nd gen Intel processors, Sandybridge is awesome.

Other VFM lappy's in your budget are MSI & ASUS. ASUS has a bad reputation for A.S.S though.

The low cost Toshibas have only 2 USB ports. I recently bought two, one for myself and one for my father. They are good but only two USBs definitely land me in discomfort once too often. I think the Sony that I had mentioned in a previous post is much better that way.
