That's true!

The Opel brand unfortunately didn't do well in India and after a point, had to pack up and leave. It might have something to do with their dealership here. They aren't very popular even now. Although, I'm not sure if it was entirely a dealership issue.

It's rather unfortunate, because the Astra and Corsa were great cars, and had GM decided to continue with Opel, we would have had the new Astra and Corsa here in India, and that would have given quite a number of cars in that price-bracket, a run for their money.

While the Corsa would have been the best premium hatch, the Astra would have given both the Hondas in the 8-15 lakh bracket would have had hard times. Assuming that the service is decent.

I don't think GM would consider bringing the Opel brand back. maybe in a few years, you never know. Because there is talk of Peugeot making an entry by 2013. And I thought they were done and dusted years ago, in India.

OT :

IMO, the reason why Opel couldn't do magic in India is the ownership cost of their vehicles.

No doubt, Opel's line-up was wonderful. With the kind of equipment list the Astra had, it was introduced in India light years ahead of it's time. The SAIL and Swing have very good styling.

But come to ground realities and the cars were a big let down when it came to FE (my SAIL 1.4 returns 11 kmpl in the city) and the maintenance costs (they are monsters to maintain).

I don't think Opel can change these basic facts about their cars; and hence, it wouldn't make sense for them to re-enter the market, not now or a few years down the line. Very few will actually pay a premium for a non-premium vehicle.

Of course, no one's gonna be as happy as me if they do come to India. Spares will be readily available and slightly cheaper

It was posted couple of pages back that the tickets are available ONLY in the counters - not via online.

That's odd.

Considering that the Up! 3-door was spotted on a flat-bed recently, presumably for display purposes at the Expo. So If it is going to take the Up! one year or more for a formal entry into our market, and if it isn't going to be displayed at the Expo, then what was that Up! doing on a flatbed here in India?

Re: 2012 Auto Expo - What to Expect?!

Oh iam eagerly waiting on what volvo is planning to showcase its next gen bus, if at all they are planning to do so.
Also any word on different diesel engine for polo? 1.2L, 3 pot engine is not an ideal solution for what you consider a premium hatch.

Re: 2012 Auto Expo - What to Expect?!

Concept A-Class at the Auto Expo should be very interesting since the concept has been well received at previous shows around the world.

The Expo is going to be great!
Looking forward to the Team-BHP coverage since I wont be able to make it!

According to autocar India, vw has not worked out a cost structure for the car to be built here, and hence it will be some time till the car is launched. So, vw does not want to showcase it this early.
