One more reason to let the Vista sales figures show independently.

Increase in excise duty for diesel cars is segment specific while increase in diesel prices affects everyone.

Every body knows that but the administration do not have the will power to make it happen. No politians will be able to do this. The diesel duty is for political reasons, not based on economics.
It is not as simple as just an increase or removal of subsidy. Every nation subsidizes its fuel. An attempt is being made to compensate the huge subsidy bill. Targeting passenger cars is not at all monstrous but care should be taken as not to burden the buyer much. A quarter/half year/annual diesel tax may be one of such ways. This can be implemented easily as all the infrastructure for collecting the taxes is already in place.

Yes, that would be right.

It may help us understand the quantum of sale of diesel vehicles. Various reports put the consumption of diesel by cars variously, ranging from 0.6 % to 15 %. The separate figures at least let us understand, if not in entirety, the consumption patterns and the quantum of consumption of diesel.

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

Fortuner and XUV sold out for 4 months - both the cars anyways had a long waiting list, was shocked that a 14 lakh XUV had to get a draw done like Tata nano for the lucky owners.

With budget looming around the corner, the diesel cars would all have ready buyers, infact we have been seeing many members who booked Swift go in for cars like Punto, Polo to protect themselves from any tax hike on diesel cars.

Expecting good sales figure for all diesel cars in Feb and march.

Re: January 2012 : Indian Car Sales

Although the team is doing excellent work of compiling such useful and interesting data, I am a tad bit disappointed that figures of BMW, Audi and Mercedes are not provided anymore like they used to be at one point of time. They are part of an extremely fast growing market and would make for interesting data. Hope the team is looking at the possibility of acquiring data from the above mentioned brands and there competitors.
