The day is already here. If you visit any Maruti dealer, Swift & Swift Dzire Diesel versions are available without waiting periods. This is happened for the first time in last fours years.

I feel the main reason for recent reduction in Petrol prices is increase in Diesel prices, which has reduced the subsidy burden to a large extent.

Not sure about the SEZ, but I had recently heard some talks about it. Don't know how far it has progressed. The process is probably underway as of now.

There are a few IT companies out here but as of now none of the major ones. The only one of some significance in Goa is Persistent.

I think the Govt is playing it smart by reducing petrol prices so that they come on par with diesel instead of hiking diesel prices which will invite a lot of criticisms and strikes.

As on May 11, diesel is 52.59 & petrol is 52.08 - petrol is cheaper than diesel.

Haha this must be have happened first time in the world. Diesel is always cheaper than petrol due to lesser production cost but now its just opposite in GOA.

Hello esteem_lover,

Rather than playing smart, I think this is sensible move by the Goa government. The taxes on petrol & diesel in India are ridiculous. We all know that almost 50% of fuel prices go as different state / central government taxes.

In case of Goa the government has let go of Sales Tax (I think 20% VAT), which has brought the prices of petrol & diesel at par after recent cut in petrol prices (& hikes in Diesel prices).

And even if this is a political action it is good, because after-all the common man is currently benefiting in Goa.

I hope the prices of second hand diesel cars become more reasonable since diesel is more expensive.

Check the prices in the US. Diesel is more expensive - always has been.

Ditto for the UK, Germany and Switzerland. Makes sense if you price on Calorific value.

makes sense. Surprisingly diesel is cheaper in France and some other developed nations. Popularity of Diesel has gone up tremendously.

Not just calorific value.
Calorific value of petrol is greater than diesel. 45.8 : 45.5 MJ/kg respectively.

Its the density that is also taken into account.
After taking density and calorific value you're left with the fact that a unit of diesel contains about 15% more energy by volume.

Quite the opposite. Diesel always costs more to produce (even in India). Its the taxes that play havoc. Please check following:

Petrol:
Cost Price: Rs 41.30
Central Excise : Rs 9.48
State VAT : Rs. 10.20
Total : Rs. 63.09 (includes dealer commission et al.)

Diesel:
Cost Price: Rs 42.16 (cost price of diesel is more than petrol)
Subsidy: Rs. 2.90
Central Excise : Rs 3.56
State VAT : Rs. 5.77
Total : Rs. 49.69 (includes dealer commission et al.)

Above is the price build-up of petrol and diesel in Delhi.
