Mahindra XUV500 with 6-Speed Automatic in 2015. EDIT : Now launched at Rs. 15.53 lakh

Mod Note: Our XUV500 AT Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Mahindra will bring to the market, a 6-speed automatic version of the XUV 500 in 2015.
This will be introduced first in Jan 2015 on a SsangYong compact SUV followed by the XUV 500.
This will be the first instance where Mahindra and SsangYong will be sharing mechanical components.

Sigh! In my opinion, 2015 is too far away. Ideally with Duster, Terrano and many others creating some competition for XUV5OO, the change is expected sooner than this. At AutoExpo they also showcased hybrid diesel - that is still ok to have in 2015/2016 but automatic is must on high priority!

I am really looking at this Auto box. After using an AT box for the first time in the BMW, I am a die hard fan now. An AT box in the XUV will make it the perfect vehicle to replace the Innova, given the VFM pricing.

2015? XUV 500 has already lost the novelty factor. By 2015 it will be as good as Scorpio. When will these guys learn? They had AT in Scorpio since 2008. So, right from the day one, they could have launched an AT XUV. But no, they just had to give stepmotherly treatment to AT lovers.

Most manufacturers do this. If Duster had come with an AT, I would have bought it in 2012 itself. Now, if Renault introduces an AT in 2020 and expect me to buy it then they can't be more wrong.

A company by the name DSI was supplying the automatics for Mahindra, which was then used in Scorpio. But once this tie up got over, so does their access to auto transmissions.
Now, by having acquired SsangYong, Mahindra is hoping to utilize their technology.

After DSI, Mahindra moved to Bosch 6 speed AT box. This is still available and supposedly better than the DSI box.

A 6 speed AT on the XUV5OO is very tempting but 2015 is way too late.

India is now moving towards AT very heavily. This is especially true at the premium end where the default option is AT. For example, I see a majority of Fortuners on road are 2WD AT's.

I think the bottom of the pyramid is also moving towards AT (AMT) thanks to the Celerio. I agree - 2015 is way too late and one will have newer, fresher and more appealing choices.

The 2015 intro is just indicative timeline. They will have to debug the integration properly & going by how they managed the infotainment system it looks like it will be 2016 before the XUV500 AT can be termed reliable.

re: Mahindra XUV500 with 6-Speed Automatic in 2015. EDIT : Now launched at Rs. 15.53 lakh

All the rants for the delayed Auto-transmission aside, XUV would be a killer package with the Auto-Box! I would trade in my 2013 W8 for a new Automatic W8 for sure. The warranty would also be running out by then.

I think Mahindra is playing its cards very carefully. They would not want any issue with the Auto-Box owing to quite a bit of negative publicity regarding the reliability of XUV doing rounds already. Being the new flagship of the Mahindra range, this would be extensively tested and validated throughout 2014.

Can't blame Mahindra for treading very carefully

I hope its a traditional Torque converter type gearbox and not AMT. I'd love see a AWD + AT version being sold in our market.

Actually, the genius at Mahindra lies in the fact that their products continue to be successes, long after the novelty factor has worn off.

The Scorpio has been around for a decade. It still sells 3000 - 4000 units each month....this withOUT price cuts. Ditto for the Bolero which is the best selling UV in India. Mahindra definitely won't mind the XUV500 doing a "Scorpio".

For cars costing over 15 lakhs, AT is the transmission of choice for a majority of customers. About time that the competent XUV got a slushbox, it will definitely widen its appeal.

The 6 speed AT that's present in SsangYong Kyron is indeed a torque converter type.

They currently have a 7 speed, 6 speed and Benz 5 speed AT.

The 6 speed one is said to have an artificial Intelligence to 'remember' drivers shift patterns, and re align the rations accordingly.
The link to engine is via a lock up torque converter.
And it has a anti slip provision also, mainly for winter driving pattern.
Hill start assist.

Mahindra XUV500 automatic will use Aisin gearbox.

Aisin six-speed torque convertor will feature in the XUV500 by mid-2015. Aisin Seiki of Japan, a top global supplier of automatic transmissions, to supply the next-generation six-speed auto gearbox for future M&M and SsangYong models.

The upcoming SsangYong compact SUV (code: X100) will be the first recipient of this transmission followed by Mahindra’s XUV5oo.

The only 6 speed gearbox from Aisin that can handle upwards of 300Nm torque from the XUV engine is the TF-80SC. This is the same gearbox found in the Volvo range of cars as well as earlier version of RR Evoque before they moved to 9 speed ZF.

Looks like it is a Torque Convertor equipped unit with double clutch operation for selection of gears. Also, since it is already being used for AWD configurations, we can hope & pray for an AT AWD XUV500. W10 version perhaps? Do it M&M.
