Mahindra XUV300 clocks 13,000 bookings in 28 days

75% bookings are for the top end variants

In just 28 days the company has received the overwhelming response, with an average of 465 bookings a day, since Mahindra launched the XUV300 on February 14, 2019 in Mumbai.

This the company says has enabled the XUV300 enter the top 3 in the compact SUV segment in its very first month.

Quote:
Commenting on the milestone, Veejay Ram Nakra, chief of sales and marketing, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra: “We are extremely happy with the overwhelming response to the XUV300. In a highly competitive segment such as the compact SUV, we have received over 13,000 bookings and in the very first month itself, we have entered into the Top 3. This is in-line with our objective of achieving 15 to 20 percent share of this segment and reaffirms the fact that the XUV300 proposition has resonated well with the customers. What is also encouraging is that over 75 percent of our bookings are for the top end variants of the XUV300.”

The company claims that the hot-selling XUV300 has generated over 250,000 leads till date.

Wow, 13,000 bookings is a great start!

Happy to see Indian companies stepping up the game - it's a journey but Tata and Mahindra have lately been delivering good products and listening to the customers.

With the increase in competition, it is we the customers who benefit the most!

Great news if these are all confirmed bookings post the price reveal. It makes me wonder which car is going to lose the most to the XUV300. Will it be the competition like Nexon and Ecosport or would it be the Creta instead where potential customers willing to spend 13 to 14L will be swayed towards the feature loaded XUV300 instead of a feature poor but slightly spacious Creta.

13,000 is a brilliant start! That's the Brezza ball park figure. But I guess actual sales would settle after say 5-6 months.

It's a good point. I was under the impression that Ecosport/Nexon/WRV would mainly face the heat but now that the maximum sales are coming from the top variants it looks like the XUV300 has perhaps pulled some prospective buyers from one segment above.

Getting bookings is one thing and converting them is another. Although 13k is a very good start, but there will be a lot of cancellations as well (especially after the price reveal). I am assuming that 13k bookings is from the date when the pre-launch bookings opened and not after the launch on 14th Feb.

And yes, it surely looks like XUV is hitting the next segment more than its own segment. In such case, only Ecosport will face the heat, that too for its top variants (T+, S, Signature).

In its segment the Ecosport looks likely to take some hit as its priced closer, specially the top trims. Brezza customers anyway don't look anywhere else and Nexon is priced almost a segment lower so the VFM factor shields it from any effect.

However it might affect the segment above a bit, especially the Duster,Captur, Kicks etc. Agreed they don't manage any significant numbers but still whatever they do might get further challenged. I dont think Creta would be affected much because just like Brezza, its a default safe choice for our market in that segment(14-17L) among general public.

One upside of all this, Ford may have to price-correct Ecosport (esp. higher variants that are getting dangerously close to next segment prices) to stay competitive.

Creta shouldn't really be threatened by XUV 3OO. Indians love buying the largest car they can. Creta is larger than others in the bunch, and the most neutral design too that appeals to a larger cross-section of buyers.

I still have my doubts about its success. This 13,000 number looks very suspicious to me. Maybe it shows the initial enthusiasm. Or maybe it is another Creta (i.e. overpriced success) in the making. We will see few months down the line.

I wouldn't look too much into the booking numbers.

For one, no company shares the net number of bookings (total scored (minus) cancellations = net scored), and there have been quite a few cancellations as per my knowledge/sources.

Two, I have received calls from Mahindra's Area Office in Bhopal and Central Office in Mumbai asking me why I cancelled my booking. Upon my saying that the car is good but overpriced and didn't feel VFM in my opinion, the guy at the other end replied that others had also voiced the same. Which means there have been other cancellations too, and there is vocal feedback regarding overpricing which has been conveyed to the company.

If you think about it, all this might just be a PR exercise to ease the customers sitting on fence to decide for the car. If so many people are buying it, it must be good!

Like RA says, they know people feel it is overpriced, specifically the top trims. And what do they put out in the press release - top trim sold the most.

Next few months are going to be interesting, the sales numbers would put all the speculation to rest.

I have received the very same calls and response from Mahindra, multiple times, before they finally relented and agreed to cancel my booking and refund the money. Till then, they tried all means, including offering extended warranties etc, to ensure that the cancellation did not take place. If a product is indeed selling so highly, I doubt that any manufacturer would go to such great lengths to dissuade a customer from going ahead with the cancelation.

I am therefore a little skeptical on the published figures.

Great numbers indeed, looking forward to see the numbers in upcoming months.

Hope this success will not be an excuse for Mahindra to over price the upcoming cars and call them as "premium" in Indian car market !

Re: The Mahindra XUV300, aka Ssangyong Tivoli. Edit: Launched @ 7.9 lakhs

At 15 lakhs for the top end, it is dangerously close to Creta. The 1.6 diesel automatic is about 16L on the road and the SX variant is about 16.7L.
That's about 1-1.5L higher than the Creta. In terms of EMI its hardly 3K extra. If someone does not mind the additional EMI, Creta offers a lot more space esp boot space and comfort, though scored low on safety.
Creta will not be affected neither will be Nexon. Ecosport will be hit and the other UV like duster, kicks and the likes.

Off topic but I belive you have mentioned Creta prices. I went to see the car 2 weeks back and the Diesel SX AT is listed at 18.9L OTR Delhi ( state with one of the lowest OTR prices in the country). So the Creta is quite some distance above.
