In case of the PSUs - the majority shareholder is the Govt. So any profits distributed as dividend also goes back to the Govt.

For private firms, the same applies - profits go back to shareholders as dividends. OR can also be invested back in the company, if management sees that as the best use of profits.

With the global crude market so volatile, (currently rising, as of now) whatever dips might have come, the government must have asked the OMCs to hold onto that to try and prevent a short term rise.
This daily increase/decrease causes great anxiety among the masses, amplified by these media outlets.

Recently did a Pune- Ahmedabad-Pune bike ride. Came across banners like these all along the way on petrol pumps near MH-GJ border. Petrol in GJ is cheaper by around Rs. 15 and Diesel by Rs. 5. Near the border the petrol pumps on MH side were deserted while people filled up their tanks full on the GJ petrol pumps.

Let the elections get over and daily increases would be back. Petrol would touch 130-140 very soon with current crude prices.

Increase by INR 30 / lit is actually quite expected, given the past behavior of the OMCs.

I don't think government can afford this to pass on to consumers. If they do this, inflation is bound to skyrocket even now it is beyond RBI's target range, and 2024 is not so far away plus we have elections in Himachal and other states as well this year.

What if India gets a special price from Russia? Petrol price may go down by Rs. 5, not more, because the government will want to continue filling its coffers.

Russian oil too hit ~$100 although the discount to Brent crude is the highest on record..

However the shipping charges of Russian crude is sky high. May be more cost effective to buy Brent/ Dubai crude itself at a higher price.
