Well why can't he buy the Polo sedan 1.2 TSI itself then?!
That would make more sense!

I guess it would but somehow, the hot hatch idea doesn't get out of my head. Pity that we aren't getting one.

Didn't Fiat 500 impress you as a hit hatch?

It looks nice, but the Fiat 500 sold in India is slooooow. A Palio 1.6 would show it a clean pair of heels.

I think VW will have to provide at least one powerful engine in the Polo, whether it is the 1.2TSI or the 1.6. Otherwise the car will be a bit of a dud.

If the Polo is just going to be a Fabia with a posher badge, we might as well forget all about it.

Going by the recent trends of VW marketing, I get a feeling that they are committed to the business and would not want to spoil their reputation like their sister-concern.

I agree....or maybe I hope so. One element I noticed in their ad was the complete absence of mention of Skoda, save in a few places where they had to say VW has 7 brands. If they felt tagging Skoda along would have helped they would have leveraged that to the hilt.

Hormazd had written in Edmunds sometime back ( India: Up! To Factor Prominently in Volkswagen's Future ) that VW is all too aware of Fabia's "tepid" response and "Judging by the tepid response here to the Skoda Fabia, VW is worried about meeting its India target of 25,000 units a year".

They would hence avoid mistakes made by Skoda. As for A*S*S I guess only time will tell.

Update : rumour mills are working overtime on this.

The TOI full paper ad will be used as a prelude for the surprise launch of Polo in Dec'2009. 500 Polo's are ready at the plant and awaiting the launch.

^^ Launch? Maybe Yes, in time for the Auto Expo.
But, actual sales is supposed to start only in March, is it not?

Yes they might go with Ford way of preview launch and then months later full launch.

Rendering – New VW Polo sedan

Secret New Cars have posted a rendering of the upcoming VW Polo sedan. Reports regarding the car claim it will be displayed at the Auto Expo in January 2010.
The Polo sedan will be designed to offer comfort to the rear passengers with a softer suspension and extra legroom generated due to the extended wheelbase. Engine options are expected to remain the same as the hatchback. VW might add one or two more powerful engines on the sedan, but that again is speculation.
The Polo sedan could be introduced in India later in 2010. It will also be sold in Europe. America is also on the car’s radar.

Though it looks good but I wish the boot would be bit bigger to give it complete Sedan look.It looks like Indigo CS from Indigo job.

I remember reading somewhere that Polo sedan will be a notchback. This rendering does not seem to indicate so.

This looks like serious competition to dzire on the looks front
Why do manufacturers insist on adding a boot to a good looking hatch?

You know what, this rendering looks good because it has international spec lights and alloys and all the rest.
Let's see what it looks like when it gets dumbed down for Indian consumers!

Looks a fair bit like a notchback to me, regardless, though the rear cluster is a bit of a "tail dragger". All speculative, anyway, so BIG pinches of salt all around.

Also, the source says this article no longer exists. Wonder if it got pulled?

plus, it looks like it can be fuelled from either side! some hybrid perhaps? electric plug-in on one side and gas tank inlet on the other!?
Actually on second thoughts, that is not true: the pics are both left and right hand drive versions, hence the two gas tank inlets. Number plates are different too. My bad!
