I have confirmed news that Tata has an in house 170-180 BHP 3 liter engine in test. The rumour mill is that while the Aria gets the 140 BHP 2.2, the new safari(2011?) will have a 3 liter variant.

So will the new Safari be positioned above the Aria? In 18 Lacs territory? I guess they will continnue selling the old Safari for 10 - 12 Lacs.

Oh ok, so the reported 170 bhp engine will be a 3.0 and not a modified 2.2 Dicor, not complaining either ways. That said power greedy bhpians apart the 140 bhp engine will be more than adequate for most domestic market demands, considering that its doing a great job in the Safari and the Aria is 200kgs lighter.

I dont think the new Safari needs to be priced over the 15 lac mark. The present platform if modified and given a decent reskin job still makes a very capable car (yes..yes..reliability as well..we all know...so Tata haters union, no need to start posting, this is just a suggestion) . The likes of the Endeavour/Fortuner arent any major technological breakthroughs themselves, they are ladder on frame cars adapted from pick ups.

Cant wait to see the outcome.

I think keeping the Aria at 140 bhp and jacking the existing Safari to a 3.0L 170 bhp makes perfect sense. The Safari is an SUV and for it to be ahead of competition, it needs a powerful motor. Tata is better off selling the current Safari side by side along with the 2011 model when it comes out. That way choice is available as well. But yes at 170 bhp, they better have a good gear box.

Is this a 4 cyl one and is it defenitely not meant for a commercial purpose?

Great news indeed if it gets into Safari / Aria / Xenon.

Looking at the pics and reviews, I am more concerned about the third row leg room than the engine. I am sure TATA will give Aria with a engine carrying adequate power but if the third row does not have enough leg room Aria won't be a complete product.

Looks like launch is moved from this quarter to the next. That too at the end of next Quarter. Got this info from TATA service Edge thread.

170-180 BHP Safari? Wow, that sounds grrreat! But in that case Tata should give it a new name. Not Safari Grande. Else it will go the Sumo Grande way.

Looks like the interest has been on pause for a while. Let me start it again with this article from The Hindu. It's very long and that's why I am only posting the link.

The Hindu : Life & Style / Metroplus : The next big thing

After going through the whole article, I am not happy with the leg space for second and third rows.

why cant tata's find a good designer, If it was me, I would hire some hot shot designer and have then pen them. I dont think designing is even .5% of the cost of the project. Just plain dumb on his part.

What?!? I think Aria is one of the best looking, no wait, THE best looking MPV in India - no wait again, the world. I guess that's the problem with automobile design - you can't please everybody. I know a few who don't like Punto's or Swift's design.

Meanwhile, I discovered that top-end Safari costs Rs. 14.2 Lacs on road in Bangalore. So people are ready to pay Rs. 14 Lacs for a Tata allright. I think the top-end variant of Aria will sell close to Rs. 17 Lacs in Bangalore (because of high taxes).

Ummm, I do not think that the Aria is a work of art but I think it might look quite good on the road. It seems to have muscle in the right places. At the same time I am not claiming that it's bound to look good.

To be honest, I think the Punto looks out-of-this-world in real and just very good in the pictures (just an example).

Let's wait for the car to hit the roads, at least it's not an abomination like the stuff that the Mahindra's come up with (before anyone pounces, I liked the old Scorp, the new versions are overstyled and the Xylo is an abomination).

...
It does look quite impressive. Infact looked bigger that an Safari. Yesterday I was waiting for my company bus to arrive and saw a White un covered Tata Aria on the other side of the road. Looked like some Tata Motors official was dropped near his house. Then the car was driven a little ahead and parked on side of the road for a while. A few curious people were inquiring about the car and the driver seemed to answer them. Car had "temporary registration "MLY *"
The bulges at right places definetly make it a looker. Car looked like ready for production.
