Yes, this is a fantastic engine and gearbox.

My Laura 1.8Tsi did 10 to 11 km/l during a very spirited drive on expressway. On a steady 80 to 120kmph drive the car did >13 kmpl.

In Pune city, the car does between 8 to 10 kmpl depending upon how thick the traffic is.

Considering I just bought the superb last December, I was kind of disappointed. But when I think about it now, I would still have gone in for the superb since the passat does not fulfill a basic requirement for me (auto tranny), has less features than the superb, and is not as roomy from the inside too.

But one thing is for sure. Passat sales will pick up now... earlier the superb made the passat seem completely pointless.. atleast now there will be competition.

VW has also dropped the prices of Jetta with new CRDI Diesel engine. If it true then VW is bound to shake up the executive saloon market. All competing models like Altis, Camary, Laura, Superb, Cruze and Accord will be badly hit. Biggest loosers will be Accord as it has hardly any features, flimsy build quality and poor high speed stability as compared to German models

Had I not bought the Altis last year, I would have bought Jetta now.

Is this some kind of joke? If a company suddenly reduces the price of a vehicle by 5 Lakhs, it sends a wrong message than what is intended. The way I see it, it would mean the vehicle actually worth 5 Lakhs less than its initial price and they were looting their buyers all the way till now. All of a sudden, they decided to slash 5 Lakhs and they are still making profit out of the whole deal. So my question would be -- How much does this car actually worth..??

Buddy, from where did you get this info? AFAIK, there is no reduction in prices.
The news is that the VW launched the Passat 1.8 TSI @ 19.20 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Well it is a Petrol car, the previous one was a diesel, so you can't really say the prices were slashed. That said, the kind of inane premiums the manufacturers charge for Diesel over Petrol is unforgivable.

I don't think Jetta prices have dropped. The Comfortline with the new 2.0L engine does cost around 45K less than the outgoing model, but the new model is a manual. The outgoing model had DSG.

The true test of price would be indicated by the new price of the 2.0L Trendline. Since both the new and the outgoing versions are/were manuals.

Here too, the price differential is apparently due to a combination of the Petrol vs Diesel engine and manual vs DSG auto tranny. But you do have a point - are those 2 still worth a 5L differential. Unless they have removed some other trim from the outgoing DSG model.

Funny thing is, I was invited to TD the Passat yesterday (31/3) but was never told that the prices were heading southward.

VWs have a certain cachet that's unmatched by any Honyota. Enticing buy at this price.

The Thread title is misleading , WW has launched a Petrol Car and we have started comparing it with the diesel twin.

As will all other manufactures the price is different for both models.

It is just a case of the Petrol Engine 1.8 TSI being launched version in this engine are cheaper than the diesel variants, the same was the case with Laura when the 1.8 TSI was launched and even in the case of Superb the differential between the Diesel and Petrol Engines is similar.

So this is a similar (read same) engine as on the cheapest Laura variant and the Cheapest Superb variant and so we get Voila the Cheapest Passat Variant.

It states in today's paper about Passat launching the new petrol variant which is Rs 5 L lower than diesel.

Volkswagen brings petrol Passat at lower price tag

Pankaj Doval | TNN

New Delhi: European car major Volkswagen (VW) on Wednesday started a fresh price war in the luxury sedan segment by introducing a petrol version of Passat under Rs 20 lakh, which is almost Rs 5 lakh lower than its existing diesel version. The company, which has been making efforts to break into the Indian car market, launched the 1.8 litre petrol engine Passat at Rs 19.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the diesel version is priced at Rs 24.1 lakh. The new price will position the car aggressively against segment leaders like Honda Accord and Skoda Superb.
Neeraj Garg, marketing head for VW, told TOI that the company expects volumes for Passat to go up significantly after the petrol launch. “The new car comes with our unique TSI engine, which is known for maximum power with minimum fuel consumption. We hope to gain significantly in volumes with its launch.”
The company also launched an all-new version of its Jetta sedan that will now be strapped with a 2-litre common-rail diesel engine, against the previous 1.9 litre diesel engine. And, despite a new engine, the price of the Jetta has come down to Rs 13.9 lakh against the Rs 14.2 lakh for the previous model.
Garg said, VW’s share in the Indian car market is expected to go up, especially after the launch of the Polo compact in February at an aggressive price of Rs 4.4 lakh. The company will drive in a sedan version of the model by second half of this year.

Cars to cost more as Bharat Stage IV norms kick in today

New Delhi: The top 13 cities in the country, including Ahmedabad and Surat, will usher in the new emission norm — Bharat Stage IV — from Thursday, as a result of which auto companies have decided to hike prices of their vehicles by 1.5% to 3%. The rest of the country, which was scheduled to upgrade to Bharat Stage III, will however do so only in October this year, due to lack of supply of upgraded fuel. AGENCIES

well in view of recent developments, thanks to Volkswagen, Honda is going to get a killer blow for its Accord, not many years back I was myself a die hard fan of Honda, but their Pricing is very steep considering levels of equipment being offered, not to mention that the Germans are in a league of their own considering the fact that the interiors of any Honda are no match for their German counter parts (Compare civic to jetta, laura or Accord to Passat, superb).
well add to that the highly acclaimed 1.8 TSI/TFSI engine on offer by Volkswagen which is far more technically advanced than the I-VTEC engines which were once considered light years ahead of others.

Somebody I know intends to buy a car in this price range pretty shortly.

So here is his question.

Consider that the Honda Accord now costs 23 lacs (this is a corporate registration) and has everything in it, including AT. And a VERY comfortable rear seat.

Now consider that this person can buy a VW Passat for 23L too. On road corporate reg.
BUT the VW has no AT, only MT.

What would you buy and why?

P.S. The Superb is not an option.
